I'm considering a universal holster for large-frame automatics. Most likely nylon/synthetic construction, either for belt use or drop-leg (possibly convertible?). Something that fits on the old military ALICE-type belt would be ideal, possibly.

This is ONLY for range use just to keep the gun on my person easily. No competition or tactical usage so no particular worries about speed or being super-secure although at least a thumb-break or some kind of retention is a necessity.

I'm looking for a universal because I've got several guns I might be likely to use - full-size 1911, CZ SP01, and FN Hi-Power. I also have a CZ P07 so if it fit that it'd be a bonus; I suspect anything that fits the above would practically be too large for my Sig P6.

I like black.

Any thoughts appreciated.

I don't know how universal the Bianchi M12 is, but it sounds like something you're looking for.

I'll throw in this caveat, though. You have three different guns that cost basically $1,000 each and you're looking to cheap out on a holster. If you've ever rode motorcycles, you're no doubt familiar with the old saying, "If you have a $10 head, go ahead and get a $10 helmet."

Not sure where I said I was trying to cheap out. Or is it just that I'd like one holster for all guns, as opposed to getting a dedicated one for each? This isn't for concealed carry or run-n-gun situations of any kind, so I feel a quality universal should work fine.

VFC - thanks for the tip on the Bianchi, I'll look into that.

Bianchi Intl UM92, Cobra ...

I'd suggest the Bianchi Intl Cobra holster. It's a revised version of the M12/M92 milspec holster.
It's designed to function like the older M12 holster but can also fit 1913 rail type laser aimers or white lights.
The Cobra format can fit MOLLE, drop leg(SAS), belt, etc.

I used a Bianchi Intl M12 OD holster with my M9 9mmNATO in the US Army in the early 1990s. I also purchased & carried a Bianchi UM84R revolver holster for my Ruger GPNY .38spl +P in the 2000s.
It's handy and easy to convert-clean. The big - is the metal clips can dig into your side :( after long periods.

The UM92II is good if you like the tradional flap style military holsters.

I've had an M12 for probably 20 years now. Have jammed M9's, USP's, Hi-Powers and Sigs into it. It holds them all well enough, but not great. 1911's are a little loose (1911's being skinny and all) For the CZ's the railed version Rusty mentioned might be handy.

It's a good enough holster for holding it on your belt at the range.

I have had a Bianchi M12 holster for many years and it is very universal in the sense that it can hold a lot of different large frame autos quite securely. Great choice in a quality holster.

I would not use a one size fits all Uncle Mikes style holster.
I've not been to a public/commercial range that doesn't mandate the gun be left behind the line cleared while anyone is down range so I'm not sure where you'll be carrying.
If your range allows draw and fire practice then you want a real, fit to the gun holster.
The Bianchi holsters described above are probably your best bet but they are not cheap either and have a complicated cover flap that is all that hold a loser fitting gun in place.
Decent form fitting holsters can be had for as little as $20 each and some diligent digging in holster boxes at gun shops and gun shows will yield some high quality for pennies on the dollar.
