Georgetown Ohio teachers will carry concealed

In a resolution that was passed in April, the school board will allow certified teachers and staff to carry concealed when "Georgetown Exempted Village students return to class next week" .

"Teachers and staff who are authorized to carry weapons must maintain a concealed carry license issued by the State of Ohio and undergo training with the Georgetown Police department. A grant covers the cost of training and the district will pay $1,500 for practice ammunition".

The more, the better. The first line of defense, should something bad happen, is the people already present. When I send my kids to school, I want to know that their teachers and staff have a workable plan for fire, natural disaster, etc. as well as violent attack. A lot to ask of teachers? Sure. But a lot has been entrusted to them for eight hours a day.

I hope they will get nice pay raise for taking on extra responsibility.

Teachers will carry? Some may carry. That is about it.

Sure, but the issue here is that the plans for fire, natural disaster, tornado, etc. are all really basic and simple, involving staying in place or moving to a different location. You know how often they practice drills for these, which isn't all that often because the drills are so simple and require so little skill. Fighting an armed attacker is really a whole other sort of event. How many times is the school going to have FoF drills for the teachers?

A lot is entrusted to the teachers, and yet we pay them so very little.

Every school in the nation is required by law to perform fire drills multiple times every year, and to have fire extinguishers and other firefighting gear. Do you know how many kids have died in school fires in the last 50 years? Not one.

How many kids have died in school shootings during that time? And yet there are laws against shooter fighting equipment. Fear and propaganda trump reason yet again.

Double Naught Spy, you're right, teachers make a pittance compared to the value they add to society by teaching kids. Whole 'nother conversation.

Back on topic, the F.A.S.T.E.R. program here in Ohio is voluntary and the decision to participate is made by each local school board. If the board approves, each teacher is given the individual choice to participate or not. So only those seeking training will be armed. Some shooting schools offer the class free to teachers, others offer it at a discount, some districts are taking it seriously enough to pony up the cost. I do hope that FoF becomes a common training aid for these teachers. Link below.

Hah! That ain't gonna happen.
I wish I got a bit extra for all the added responsibilities PA and my district have heaped on me the last 23 years. Hell, I'd be happy with a Thank You!

Georgetown is about 40 minutes from me, I'd love for this to make it to my kid's district as well.

Although based on some conversations I've had with my daughter's teachers at conferences, I think I'd like to right to choose who get's to carry lol. If they can't explain the simple math at how they arrive at a grade, how can I expect them to be intelligent enough to handle a firearm safely!!!

My daughter goes to a private school. Two of the teachers are retired cops. I ain't saying they do, and I ain't saying they don't...but what I will say is that it's not a good target for some c.h.u.d. to try to make headlines. I sub and volunteer there sometimes myself.

Unless there was substantial increase in salary I would say no thanks. Let them hire professional security detail instead.

Where would they find the money to pay for professional security? I suspect your future raises would be the first place they would look. If you carry off the job for personal protection, why not carry on the job for the same reason? That you might save others is a bonus.

I agree with more duties equals more pay.

Oh! The irony! Just imagine the teachers union:alien: having to negotiate more pay based on....gun toting!!!

I wouldn't want more pay to be a factor, because then you end up with teachers who are carrying just for that extra bonus. No, I'd only want teachers carrying who truly are concerned about the safety of themselves and their students.

Of course, I'd be all for sending any teachers willing to a defensive gun training course, all on the schools dime.

Ohio has a jewel in the Tactical Defense Institute trainers who created one of the first classes oriented toward the school environment along with the Buckeye Firearms Association. https://tdiohio.com/active-killer-shooter-leciv/

Chris Bird's book on active shooters outlines in one of the chapters about going through the course.
