I may have an opportunity to go deer hunting close to home this fall, but it's an area where rifles aren't allowed. The land owner prefers pistol. So, I am looking for a load now so I can get alot of practice in with my Black Hawk.

Georgia Arms make s afairly inexpensive .45 Colt load...a 200gr Gold Dot rated at 1100 FPS.

Now, that's not quite as heavy or as fast as some of Buffalo Bores loads...but it's a lot cheaper = More Practice.

Any one every used this load, or a similar load on deer-sized game?

Appreciate any input.

Work on your eye-trigger finger coordination with the cheap stuff. Get real good on soda cans out to, say, 50 yards.

Then get a box of the hot stuff and use up maybe four or five cylinders' worth in getting used to the greater recoil and different sight-in.

Then go hunting. :)

Thanks

I guess that sounds okay. I know most of the hunting Colt loads start with 250gr bullets. My issue is shoot mostly Cowboy Loads out of my Blackhawk for cost reasons...and I just can't get a good group with them. I don't know if the lead is too soft, or the big front blade is messing me up, or if the gun just doesn't fit me right.

Hopefully, by moving up the Georgia Arms load, I can at least start seeing some good groups out of the gun. And if I don't I can't blame it on the ammo anymore. :(

I prefer a heavy loaded LSWC in the .45 Colt for deer. The Meister, (or other brand) of hard cast 255 grain LSWC over, well, say a fair amount of 2400 has been a long time favorite for deer and hog hunting. Velocity from my 7 inch Ruger is just over 1200 fps. This load groups into less than two inches at 40 yards. With a handgun, thats just about the limit for me on deer.
