I`m going to be looking at a SIG 228 on Mon. I could use some help to be sure it`s a West German made and proofed gun and all correct.

The serial number indicates a 1994 manufacturing date from the list on the SIG forums ( which I can`t join because they won`t take hotmail accounts..)

I understand that the pistol should have 3 visible matching serials numbers on the frame, slide, and side barrel breach ?

The bottom of the slide in front should have proof marks and 2 letters ?

Any other identifications or advice to be sure it is "right" would be much appreciated since it `s supposed to be NIB and it is very pricey.

Most P228s were made in Germany. The full German guns will have these proof marks on the bottom front of the slide. The 2 letter code tells you what year it was proofed not necessarily when it was assembled.

All German guns will have 3 serial numbers one on the slide, frame and barrel.

There are US assembled P228s which lack the date code and proof marks. There is also a recent batch of P228s with rails. They are basically P228 slides assembled onto a P229 SAS frame.

A NIB P228 should be priced around $650 to $700.

Thanks very much guys, the pics and advice are a great help. The gun is marked KF next to the proof marks.

Would that have come in a plastic case or the old cardboard boxes with test targets ?

In 1995 (KF) IIRC it would have come in a gray plastic box with a manual, cable lock, 2 10 round mags and test target.
