With the price of lead going up these days I've begun collecting wheel weights. Now that I've got several pounds, I intend to melt them down into ingots. I'm thinking of purchasing the Lyman reloading kit which includes the lubisizer, ingot mold, melting pot and laddle along with a few other assorted items. Cabellas has it for about $134 or so. Is this a good choice for beginning or should I go with other items first. I'll be casting 45LC and ACP as well as 44 mag, 44 spl, 357 & 38 for now. Whatta ya all think?

It depends on what you want. A good way to get into casting is to simply buy a mould and dipper -- Lee products are good -- and melt lead on a camp stove. You can use a tin can or an old pot to melt the lead.

You can shoot cast bullets from Lee moulds unsized and lube with liquid Alox. That's about the cheapest way to get into casting that I know of, and the results are quite satisfactory.

I've been using the Lyman sizer, molds, melting pot and ladddle for years. I also found that the furnace, with the mold guide, helped uniform casting, although not necessary. You will need a stout piece of wood to hit the sprue plate with. I also dropped my cast bullets on several layers of old towels so they wouldn't be dented. make sure you wear leather boots for such and put your pant legs outside the boots. Hot metal might have you jumping up and tipping the whole set of over!!

I have really liked Lee products. From the Lead furnace to their bullet molds. they are accurate, and will last forever. I got my furnace used for 20 bucks. I got my bullet molds on ebay cheap. If you look on ebay you can get a good deal, but you have to be patient. Seems like some people like to pay more than new for used items. Oh well, it was worth the wait. I also have a RCBS Lube a matic. Works great. The Lee lube is easy, but I like the RCBS better. Just depends what you prefer. You cant go wrong with lee.
good shooting
