I'm loading some 222's for a neighbor of mine but need to clean his gun before i shoot it. Doesnt look like its ever been cleaned. Its a Remington model 722. 222 ca. Question is, how do i get the bolt out of it?

I tried that. I dry fired it, pulled the bolt back and tried pulling the trigger, No go. I cant pull the trigger even a little bit after letting go of it to un bolt the action. Also tried holding the trigger in after firing and pulling bolt back. No go that way either.

Some of the old Remington 7xx series have the safety selector linked to the bolt release. Pull bolt back, then push the safety past its normal position to release bolt, then remove bolt.

Is the action removed from the stock? That makes the whole mechanism much easier to see.

Sorry for no reply lastnight, had to get some sleep. 5:00 comes too early some mornings! Yes, the action is removed. I'll also try pushing the safety forward. It has two very small screws on the action that i can no use for. I thought by removing them, the bolt would come out but it didnt help.

If the two small screws was on the side of the action then they where the plug screws for mounting a peep sight. In front of the trigger there should be a small tab the you hold down, slide bolt to the rear, to remove the bolt like on a Model 700. This is all I ever had to do to remove a bolt on a Model 721 which is the big brother to a Model 722.

Yes it's the square button in front of the trigger. If the gun has never been cleaned it will be very hard to press. I ran into the same problem with a 721. You might have to take the action out of the stock to get enough leverage on it. You can try a small squirt of a penetrating oil on it first. Just remember to clean the trigger group out with lighter fluid before you start shooting again.

Ok thanks guys,I got it. There was the button in front of the trigger. I got it cleaden up. Looks pretty good and shoots the same. I loaded some Hornady 55g sp's with H355. The cases he gave me to load were in the original boxes. Pretty old. Peters,(dupont) winchester and winchester super i think. Anyway, it shoots good and the neighbor is happy so thats good enough. I do hope he cleans if a little more often though.
