A 24 inch 6.5 Grendel upper followed me home the other day. I'll cobble it together with some other bits and pieces and I should have a decent long range AR for about $300 (or 500 shots for $1 each, and I get a free gun!). If I don't like it, I'll likely re-barrel in 7.62x39 (I think), or have it cut down.

Now I need to get some glass for it. I don't want to invest too much in the glass -- since I am only into the gun for $300. I have an extra Burris PEPR mount that would be great, but it is for a 1 inch tube, not 30 mm. A 1 inch scope on a 24 barreled gun seems like heresy, but the price is right, and I abhor cheap non-rugged rings. I might try out a 2-7 Vortex Viper I have on my hunting rifle, but ideally I'd like something with a bit more oomph. Maybe a fixed Bushnell/Nikon/SWFA 10 power?

Thoughts?

What do you want to hit with it on the business end? I know what I do with a long barreled Grendel, but your needs might differ from my own.

In an ideal world -- piggies. However, paper and milk jugs are probably more realistic nowadays. Fwiw the longest range near me is 500 yds, I doubt I'll have the opportunity to stretch much beyond that.

Since you’re trying to stay on the cheap, wanting more magnification than a 2-7x, and shooting out to up to 500 with a Grendel, the Vortex Diamondback Tactical FFP 4-16x44mm comes to mind, for under $300.

I'm running a 1" tube leupold 8x on my 24" grendel, but I don't even have a 500yd range nearby. Maybe one a few hours away. It's a older scope, but my build wasnt a "budget" build either. My barrel alone was 300+

Another suggestion is Primary Arms scopes. I find them very comparable to the Nikon P series. I am currently using two scopes from Primary Arms, an 4-14x44 ACSS HUD 308/223 DMR and a 4-14x44 Mil/Mil scope, both are FFP. The down side is that they are 30mm tubes but Primary Arms usually discounts their mounts with purchase of a scope.
