Jacksonville store clerk, 64, sorry she had to shoot robber
Associated Press

April 16, 2005

JACKSONVILLE -- A hooded gunman may have thought the older, female clerk would be an easy mark as he entered a convenience store, weapon blazing and demanding money.
But he wasn't counting on Janet Grammer, who was filling in for the regular clerk. The 64-year-old mother of 10 and former security guard pulled a gun from under the cash register and began shooting, hitting the would-be robber in the chest.

"I think he thought I was an old woman and would just give him the money," Grammer said Friday, recalling Thursday afternoon's shooting at the Apple Gate Food Store. "I think I scared the hell out of him."

"I thought he was getting ready to shoot me in the head," Grammer said. "So, I shot him in the chest. My life was at stake, I thought he was going to kill me."

The gunman, whose name has not been released, was being treated at Shands Jacksonville hospital Friday with a gunshot wound to his chest. Ken Jefferson, a police spokesman, said the man faces robbery charges once he recovers.

Grammer was just watching the store Thursday afternoon while the regular clerk had gone to doctor's appointment when the gunman entered the store.

"He came in with a hood over his head, waving his gun and hollering to give him all the money," said Grammer.

"He fired two shots in the back wall," Grammer said. "He had the biggest damn gun I have ever seen." Police told her it was a .357-caliber Magnum.

She pulled out a .38-caliber pistol from under the cash register and fired once.

The wounded man fell to the floor, dropped his gun and his hat, got up and ran for the door, leaving a trail of blood. Grammer fired two more shots at the fleeing man.

According to the sheriff's report, a man fitting the suspect's description went to the Orange Park Medical Center in a Jacksonville suburb a short time later with a gunshot wound to the chest. He told doctors that he shot himself.

He was later transferred to Shands Jacksonville hospital.

Grammer, who also has 32 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, said she worried that she had killed the would-be robber.

"You never want to kill anybody. All I could think about was his poor parents," Grammer said.

Grammer has experience with guns after working 10 years as a security guard in Charleston, S.C.

"But I never had to shoot anybody," she said. "I'm sick over it. It was very upsetting. I'm not feeling real perky."

"The good Lord had to be with me," she said.

Gramma Grammer is not only a good shot, but a whizbang spokeswoman for armed citizens and a perfect instructor on how to talk after a shooting. She hit all of the right notes:

"I thought he was getting ready to shoot me in the head," Grammer said. "So, I shot him in the chest. My life was at stake, I thought he was going to kill me."

Incidentally, I think she's entitled to the .357 as a war trophy.
