I finally had the chance to visit home this weekend to get away from my college, and gave the new Bass Pro (Portage, IN) a visit. After oogling at all the nice (slightly overpriced) handguns, I found myself looking at the tiny rack of pre-loved long guns. A few American shotguns, a Savage in .300 WSM for $300 with accutrigger (would have piqued my interest if not for the caliber), and lo and behold, I spot a neglected Rem. 700 in .270 for $220. A few dings here and there, but the barrel crown is okay, and the rifling looks pretty good, so I said "wrap her up".
She's not really anything special, but came with a HUGE damaged Swift scope, scope mounts, and a front sight. Just a standard synthetic stock, and a blind mag, so no bells or whistles here. After all my surplus experience (I'm a cruffler), the trigger is very crisp, albeit a bit on the heavy side. I cleaned most the rust off, and got some oil everywhere to keep it at bay until I get the time to take some steel wool to it. To my astonishment, the bore cleaned up amazingly with very bright rifling. I'll have to get a good, budget scope for her. I'm thinking Burris, Bushnell, or Nikon in a 4-16 magnification.
Unfortunately, I have to leave my guns and go back to school in a few minutes, so no pics. How did I do? The gun was originally on sale for about $350, so it probably sat there and rusted for a bit. Being a surplus guy, I just can't say no to the diamonds in the rough. I'll have to buy some dies and get to putting her to work. Wish me well.
