found one of these in my local shop, its an M1 garand using what appears to be BM-59 parts while retaining the en block clip system. This is pretty much my dream carbine, but they want $895 for it. Now I wouldn't mind paying that price if it was a decent conversion. Anyone know the reputation of golden state arms and their work?

Golden State Arms did business in the
'50's and '60's. I can't really be definitive but I do recall hearing of problems with the functioning of the "Tanker" Garands they produced.

They were called Tanker Garands. I've seen em when they were new and one that was used, I would not lust after one, the muzzel blast is extreme, get a M-1 Rifle.

I have a tanker M1, and I love it. I added an Amega handguard rail and a Burris pistol scope, and it's a fantastic rifle. A price of $900 is a bit high (I paid $675 several years ago, and mine is an Arlington Ord build). One test you can do in the shop is to remove the stock and recoil spring, flip the action upside down and see if the bolt and oprod will slide back and forth when you tip the muzzle up and down. If they don't, the fit is poor and the rifle will probably have problems.

Will the shop let you try it for a couple days and bring it back if it has problems?
