Leupold vx-r 3-9 40mm{other power configurations available}, the red dot when turned on where cross hairs meet is great for brush hunting where you can lose sight of them. The fire dot 4 reticle is what I chose. Its a heavy duplex with the top cross hair removed ,again great for brush and wooded hunting.Opticsplanet has the best pricing and from this sight you get 5% off.Always free shipping.30 mm tube incredible light transmission.

I honestly don't know how you folks shoot those rifles with the scopes set so far back.

It might be more a necessity than a choice, most receiver mounts set the scope very close to your eye. I've used XS Scout Mount on my Marlins, it allows mounting the scope either over the barrel or directly above the receiver for more comfortable cheek weld and eye relief. It also allows you to install a peep sight on the receiver for backup.

I use the Leupold Scout.

Indeed, Badlander. Extended eye relief is the way to go! I use one on a .308 Ruger, too. I'll use another on a .45-70 when I get a .45-70. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying several .357 leverguns and irons.

the only time i was ever kissed by a scope was in africa useing a 375 H&H mag with a 3x9 leupold scope and the shot was a very fast shot at a kudu at 45-50 yards running and the rifle was not complety on my shoulder, my fault alone. i have never been kissed with any other rifle-scope combo. eastbank.

That's because you know how to shoot, eastbank. and I'd imagine your shotgunning
helps too.

It's been called "Kaibob eye". Hahaha... I think I saw that when reading some Cooper (reading time always well spent).

I have a bushnell 1-4 shotgun scope on my gbl, but tapatalk will not let me post the pic again. Says it's already been posted to another thread. If anyone knows why to fix this let me know.

A 1-4x or 2-7x is perfect. I prefer something with several inches of eye relief (but not IER/scout) for magnums and big bore levers. Burris seems to offer a lot of eye relief options and are known for being recoil tolerant even though they do not have the clearest or brightest optics.

My 1895GuideGun wears a Leupold 2.5x fixed.
However, If I were to start hunting a good bit with it, I'd go to a higher magnification variable.
My choice would be the Leupold VX3 1.5-6x. Second choice would be the 2.5-8x,

My brother uses his 1895 (22"bbl) extensively for hunting in NV, Colorado, and Utah for mule deer and elk. His wears a Burris Fullfield-II 2x-7x with ballistic reticle. He's shot enough with his 400gr FNGC load to where he knows where the trajectory corresponds to the reticle.

Just last evening I was deer hunting with my Rem Mod-7 that has a Leupold VX3 1.5-5 on it. Marvelous scope, but at twilight I found myself wanting "more" trying to decide if the deer that came out was a doe or "spike". He finally walked close enough I could tell it was a "button" buck with about 3/4" of "spike" showing, so I let him walk...
Hence, I vote for the 2.5-8x.
My 7mm08 (another Mod-7) wears one and it's my favorite scope of the 3 dozen or so I own. Others are Vari-X II Leupolds !!! Mostly 2x-7x's, though I do have one 3x-9x 40mm and another 50mm. Don't especially care for the 50mm, however. Too bulky.

Thanks, everyone, for all of your excellent input! After reading through these posts and doing a lot of research, I have decided on the Leupold Ultimate Slam 3-9X. As HQ put it, the ballistics reticle is a perfect match for the trajectories of the the Hornady loads and others, and scope has a nice profile and appeal on the Marlin Guide. I'm usually not a big fan of ballistic sights because they can get very busy and clutter up the sight picture (just my opinion, of course), but the Leupold Slam is very clean and offers holdovers @ every 50yds through 300yd.

This is such a great forum and I respect and appreciate the opinions of all of the members! My son will love his birthday present in March and I will be sure to post any photos of his hunts and adventures in Mississippi and points out West! :)

I like the Weaver Classic V series 1-3x on my Marlin 1895. Very tough, clear glass, lightweight and decent amount of eye-relief for dealing with exposed hammers and hard kicking 45/70 loads. I had come down to this, or the much pricier Leupold VX3 at the time, and could only get this one without a long wait. I'm glad I chose the Weaver, it works great.

Please forgive the drift but I have to ask where does one get a suppressor for a .45/70?

Any .45 caliber rifle suppressor will do. .45-70 produces far less gases than bottlenecked .458/.460 calibers and gas pressure at the muzzle is lower as well. This subject might be more appropriate in NFA section so I won't go into details here.

9mm+: I'm glad you found the scope you were looking for. I'm sure your son will love the range extension provided by ML SBR reticle - I know I do. :)

I think he'll be very excited! :) He's still here for Christmas break (he goes back to Ole Miss on the 18th), so I've been sneaking around with all of this, but I'll get the goods in the next few weeks. It'll be awesome!
