Goodyear hates gun owners.

TLDW:
Goodyear fired a long-term employee in Australia because an acquaintance brought a disassembled target rifle to a shared parking lot outside a Goodyear office building.
The employee (was) David Waters, an international rifle competitor.
The speaker is Australian Senator Leyonhjelm.

Goodyear also sells Dunlop brand tires.

While the reaction was severe, it's Australia. Big no guns/ban going on there right now. It's something that has been in controversy in America dating back decades - the property owner has the right to say what is allowed there, corporations have policies against guns or carrying them on the property.

An old article from 2013: http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052702303983904579095532026750354

Nothing new - what Goodyear does in Australia is really no different than what thousands of American corporations do here.

Check your employee handbook and see what sort of prohibitions exist. Most do.

Tirod,

Look at the video again. The parking garage isn't a Goodyear garage. The rifle wasn't brought there by Mr. Waters. Mr. Waters wasn't on the clock being on his lunch hour. Mr. Waters wasn't charged with any crime. The rifle was never on Goodyear property and the Goodyear employee wasn't in possession of a firearm and was on his lunch hour. There's no basis for termination under the most baroque company disciplinary rules.

Here's a quick letter you can send.

"I'm providing a link to a video of a speech by Senator Leyonhjelm in Australia telling the outrageous story of the firing by Goodyear of an international competitive shooting sports Master by the name of of David Waters because a fellow competitor sought Mr. Waters' advice on his lunch hour and while in a parking garage that was not Goodyear property.

Because of this firing I and my family and friends will not use Goodyear products such as Goodyear or Dunlop tires until they reinstate Mr. Waters with an apology.

Please review the video of Senator Leyonhjelm's speech and Goodyear's prejudicial treatment of an innocent person.

Thank you,

If Goodyear is like any other multinational company, the US corporate office has zero to do with the Australian one and vice versa. You're better off going to goodyear.com.au and using Australian contact info. Same thing goes for the media. Granted, an American telling an Aussie what they should be offended by will go over like a fart in a space suit but at least you'll be talking to the right people.
