Got this email from my friend. We shot prairie dogs on his place weekend before last. Got 60 to 70 of them. I guess we didn't make a big enough dent. ;)

haha! So that shoot then was quite successful - well, in part!! I forget the estimates I have heard of ''town population'' per acre but it seems like monster numbers potentially.

Of topic Larry but - anapex had his O/U 28G at our shoot Saturday - enough folks fell in love with it - he coulda sold it four times over!! Oh and - new pics of Matt soon I hope.[/hijack]

Ooooh, 28 ga o/u, drool.

I'm gonna take mine out to the prairie dog town next weekend. My friend Scott drives us around on his golf cart to different places to shoot. Several shots presented themselves as we drove by the holes.

Sporting clays on the ground, from a moving vehicle...

Hey, I might have invented a new sport. ;)

Yep Sorry Larry, but no patents on that one! I've already shot one possum from the seat of my tractor :D I used a .22 revolver though.
I'm trying to figure out a way to carry my air rifle or compound bow on the tractor at work. I saw 9 ground hogs when I was mowing last week, and its not legal to shoot firearms around there

I shot a few prairie dogs with Ashley Emerson and Rich Lucibella this weekend, and had a fine time.

All this time I've seen pictures of people using HP centerfire rifles for 'em. This was my first run, and we used .22 rimfires. The nice thing about .22 LRs out of a rifle is that they're nice and quiet. Out of a Kimber bolt action, they're deadly accurate. With Winchester Power Points, the prairie dogs are surprisingly hard-thumped.

I was not previously aware of how large they got to be. Almost as large as a jackrabbit, in some cases:

Matt, I was using my .17 HMR and Sandy was using .22lr, Stingers specifically. She kept her shots under 150 yds, I shot between 100 and 200. One dog hit with the Stingers was hit it the stern end, the bullet exited his head. They did the job fine.

This particular pasture is only about 10 acres, and a centerfire puts them into their holes pretty quickly. That's why we use the rimfires. Not to get too graphic, but I hit one in the head at 150 yds with the .17, and it pretty much removed his head.

Oh, and around here I won't pick one of the little buggers up. They've already detected plague in them this year.

Our shots the other day were between 30 and 110 yards, with most around 50 to 75 yards. For that kind of shooting, a .22 LR is mandatory. That Kimber I'm holding there, BTW, is Ashley Emerson's, and is pure flipping poison. At around $1200, I would have to say that it's worth every penny he paid for it. I have rarely had so much fun with any single rifle. During the course of 3 days, we probably put 300 rounds through it, while ostensibly looking for hogs. :) Dead on at 75, the question was "which eye?" at 25 to 50 yards. :)

I was wearing bugspray to keep the critters off, and carefully avoided touching any body fluids, you may be sure.
