Today I achieved what had been on the back burner for way too long.

I religiously photographed every gun of all sorts (damned light was tricky so hardly best pics unfortunately) ...... even if pics taken before ...... and made list also of all with their respective Serial #'s.

Transferred list to a text file and printed that off for records .... and ...... added SN's also to reduced size versions of pics ......

And reason?? Simply that .... if heaven forbid any or all should somehow get stolen .. I have full info sufficient I think to enable useful I/D's on all. Many have distinguishing marks/features also.

I know one thing ..... if the worst were to happen ... I sure as hell a) want em back - quick. And b) want law enforcement to know up front and fast what to look for in the event there might be criminal useage.

Needless to say .. best of all is to be secure enough for theft to not be possible or likely but ..... sh*t happens! For those who may not have done this excercise yet ..... do it! It takes time but ..... it also makes sense IMO.

For disaster recovery, it's good to use a Camcorder/super8 or some type of video system. VERY SLOW pan and lots of freeze frames in high resolution of your house and property therein. Also make copies of important documents (birth, driver's license, bank & savings accts, financial stmts, veh registration, deed, loans, insurance policies, etc.) and store them not only in your safety deposit box but if possible out of state. A tornado/hurricane/earthquake or fire wipes out your home and you can recover quicker if you have those documents.

Smart. I got all my ducks in a row there too. Pics, numbers, even an intended distribution list in case something happens to me or me & my wife etc. Its not a real will or anything, no lawyer bill stamp of approval just statements written & signed. Think something like that would be honored, or should it really have a lawyers expensive magic wand waved over it?

Good Thinking.

Some :cuss:hole stole all mine when I lived in Miami in 1986.:fire: :fire: :fire:
The only one they didn't get was my colt 45. I had it with me.

The cop who came and made out the report even gave me a hard time. He said if I hadn't had all of those guns they wouldn't have been stolen. Now they were out on the streets and he might get shot with one of them.

I gave him a few choice words and told him to finish his report and get out of my house.

Never did hear anything on any of them.

Mine are all recorded now.

I keep serial numbers & descriptions of all my guns, stereo equip, cameras etc. on an Excel spreadsheet. Need to attach photos but haven't done that yet.
I keep a backup copy of the program in my desk at work. If anything changes I e-mail myself a copy then download it to the disk. If someone were to break in and steal the guns they probably couldn't help but notice the computer in the same room!

The amount of weight this will carry depends upon the state, and how you did it up. Another thing to consider is what tax consequences this might have. E.g., in PA this sort of list has negative tax consequences for your inheritors when compared with more general language.

You should be able to get a simple will drawn up for less than $150. It's money well spent.

I dunno... from what I've heard here and elsewhere, the elite are none too pleased to return guns to the rabble for any reason, no matter how well there were documented and no matter how fast it was reported. But then again, I don't actually know anybody who has had their collection stolen.
