Greetings all,

Haven't posted here in a while. Been learning about rifles. Anyway, went to the pistol range over the weekend and a gentleman there had a Socom or Mark23 with a Doctor Sight in the rear sight slot. I've seen this guy at the range a few times and this guy can shoot. He was shooting out the X ring with the HK at 25 yards. After pestering him with a bunch of questions, he let me shoot 5 rounds through the pistol. I've heard many complaints on this gun being heavy and big. I have to say, I did not find it heavy. Especially compared to all steel guns such as the 1911. Yes it was big but did not feel cumbersome. I myself have a USP 45F that I love. It is my bedside gun. Again, though the SOCOM was bigger, it didn't seem unweildy. If I had 2K to blow, this would be my next purchase. As a side note, I did not like the Doctor sight. I found I had to hunt for the dot in the sight. Definitely not as fast to aquire as regular iron sights. Again, the person that owned the pistol is more of a bullseye shooter than anything else. Also of note, in the port next to me were some LEO's practicing for qualification. They were using HK USP 40's in fullsize with the LEM trigger. Really nice gun. I'm thinking of having my USP converted to that trigger.

I drooled when I first saw the Mk23 on HK's site - until I looked up the price. I understand that the gun is pretty awesome - but there is a certain psychological issue associated with paying $2000 for a plastic gun.

They looked awesome in "Tears of the Sun" when they cleared the village. But 2k is very, very steep. For that price or a couple hundred more I can get a true custom 1911 that is indeed as much a work of art as it is a handgun.

It would be a hard decision. Probably have to have the custom 1911 AND the SOCOM. :)

Wait til you try the SOCOM suppressed. If you wear muffs all you can hear is a *pooooof*. It also cuts down on the recoil and makes it easier to get nice small groups. It does have a bad habit of spitting giant black loogies at you if you put too much water in the can, so don't wear a nice shirt to the range. :p

While I do agree that 2K is A LOT OF FRIGGIN MONEY FOR A PISTOL....ANY PISTOL..whether it's an HK SOCOM, a 1911, SigP210, whatever... I have never shot a high end 1911 as a comparison. I just have a lowly Springfield Armory loaded that I swapped for a BHP, and the USP 45F for my .45 guns. The person that owned the pistol claimed the Mark 23 shot every bit as accurately as his high end 1911 ( don't know the make). I have to agree with mmike 87 in that one must own both. Unfortunately, my funds will probably allow for neither:rolleyes: .
