So as mentioned in this thread http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=504194 this weekend was my first attempting at a sporting clays event.

Well I learned a lot and had a ton of fun, I really cant wait to do it again. So here is the "after action report"

1. I shot it with a remington 870, I was really worried that I would not be able to run the pump fast enough but I did just fine did not have any issues with it, except for one time I short stroked it but the gun it self did GREAT.

2. The course was a lot of fun, the event was held at Tacoma Sportsmen club in Puyallup Washington. The 13 stations were all pretty unique and each one was more challenging than the last.

3. I found it interesting to look at each stage and I really discovered that a station that looked pretty simple was often very tough and other stations that looked down right scary, would have a pretty simple trick to them.

4. One of the best things is that our group of 3 got put into a squad with 4 guys who were real experts (and had all they gear to match) so I got a TON of personalized coaching that improved my score and changed the way I would think about a station. These guys were obviously far above my level but like so many guys in the shooting sports they were happy to have a few young guns tagging along and they certainly shared there sport. They even let us toss our bags and ammo on the back of the golf cart they had so we didnt have to lug our stuff around.
I most certainly fell in love with my new favorite shooting sport.

Congrats. Sporting clays is the best training for hunting and most fun of any
target shooting sport. It's sure not easy.

sporting clays is a blast. i've only had trouble with a pump at one station, it was a double that went low and fast straight up the side of a steep hill.. seems like you only had a half second if that to get your shots off.

I shoot an auto but switch to my wifes Nova pump when Im in a slump. It slows me down and helps me focus. Dont let anyone knock you for it on the SC range or skeet for that matter-

Literally I had so much fun that all I had to say after the match was "Why didn't I do this 5yrs earlier" Even with the cost of 125 shells I spent less than I normally do for a day at the range when shooting my .40s&w.

Of course now I am online looking at all the cool toys including one of those 3 wheeled sporting clays carts. Or maybe this will be the reason to buy the golf cart I have always wanted (not happening on my current budget). Although several of the guys had really nice golf carts tricked out with nice gun racks and such.

I like mine...a lot.

Albuquerque has a skeet range, and I have a 870 that I want to try out there.

I am thinking to better go with my buddy and pay for his way and ammo to show me the ropes than going by myself and get frustrated.

Congrats!

You are braver than I am.

Gonzo - if you have never shot skeet before, see if you can shoot with your buddy on a range privately and start at station 7 and master the high and low house, then move to station 1 and repeat. Once you're comfortable, move and do stations 2 & 6, then 3 & 5; saving 4 and 8 for last. You'll build more confidence as you experience more early success.

Good luck!
