Greetings,
I always hear about people shooting at gravel pits, or recommending others to do so. Do these shooters ask the gravel company's permission to use their property, or do they just sneak in after-hours or Sunday for some quick blasting? Don't most have no trespassing signs posted?
Just wonderin'

For decades I shot at a local gravel pit that was owned by the township. They had no restrictions on using the pit for shooting.

When they sold this pit to a private party then the signs went up.

The answer is yes - you should ask permission . Find out who owns the land and ask .

Around here 'gravel pit' usually means forest service or logging company dug gravel pits that were mined for material to build logging roads. Inevitably they are off the beaten path and unpleasant to get to during the winter.
Any gravel pit not in the hills is owned by a gravel company and thoroughly posted as off limits to non-employees, god forbid weekend shooters.
Of course, most casual shooters up here already live on double-digit acreage and have no trouble walking out the back door a few feet to shoot. There is only one local pistol/rifle range, and it is strangely empty most of the time. Not that I mind that too much. :D
