Gun belt with stiffener/liner or not

Well I ended up getting the Beltman dual bull hide double stitched belt with the stiffener yesterday. It looks to be well made and I think I could hang a sledgehammer off it and it wouldn't sag. It looks exactly like the Better belt in post #25 page 1 at about the same price. The stiffener might not have been necessary but at least I know it will handle anything I hang on it. I'm glad my father wasn't using this belt on me when I got out of line!

I never have a problem using a single layer belt but it's all in who makes it or more accurately what cuts of leather they use to make it.

As a custom maker I only cut my belt blanks from the high back of sides of skirting leather or use bull hide for belts. The rest of the side is used for holsters and the belly portion is split into thinner material for linings and such. Yes more waste but adds to the quality of a handmade product.

Production off the shelf leather makers are working on volume with as little waste as possible and will cut a whole side into straps so it's hit and miss on how much stretch and stiffness a belt will give you.

I have used Simply Rugged thick single layer belts to good success. In reading these replies just how thick can a single layer belt be? The hide of an animal can only be so thick. My single layer belts by crude measuring are about 3/16". I carry every day and sometimes I must wear nicer clothes, a double thick belt would not go back into a belt loop to hold the extra after the buckle.

I dont use any belt i can fold in half width wise with my bare hands. I carry heavy guns though, your prefrence may differ, this type of belt can be a little uncomfortable at times.

3/16 is about 12oz leather would be heavy skirting leather. Sometimes parts are thicker in the butt/back area but that is about as thick as you are going to get consistent pieces from hides for a belt. Most two layer belts are no thicker than that, they are constructed of around 7-8 oz leather and many times belly area leather is used for the inside lining.

Bottom line is some mass production can build a two layer belt cheaper because they are using lesser quality leather to build the belt. Same with lined holsters, they can use cheap import leather with nasty looking flesh sides and line them with belly leather which someone like myself considers waste.

I have a been wearing a beltman double horse hide belt for about a decade and I have no complaints. I wear it every day, gun or no gun and it’s just as stiff today as when I got it. If I were to buy another belt today I’d get the same thing, except maybe not a 1 1/2” belt, I might step it up a bit but probably not.

I'm sorry that I missed this one. I generally enjoy a good Belt Thread! I think you made a good choice. I also have a Beltman belt with the stiffener. I've had mine for about a year and a half and I think you'll be very happy with it.
