In home depot this weekend, i saw some Rust-Oleum brand super hard industrial strength epoxy spray paint in a few colors supposedly designed for a hard coating like the white finish on your washer/dryer and stuff like that.
WOuld that work as a durable DO-IT-YOURSELF gun coating?
Just spray on and let harden?
Is there a clear coat super duper hard epoxy (dull or gloss) that is suitable for firearm fiishing?
How about regular ol' rustoleum?

GunKote is specifically made for this application and you can get it in a spray bottle, I'd probably prefer that over a paint.

I had my SIG done in GunKote and it is a pretty good finish but will still ding a bit when the dumbass range officer knocks your table over and sends your gun skidding across the cement floor.

Is the GunKote slick, like a blue finish, or is it rough like the do-it-yourself spray truck bed liners?

It's smooth although if you apply it to a bead blasted surface I assume it will come out a bit differently.

That might be preferable to using the duraliner bedliner type spray that I believe Drundel posted about for a duck gun. Although, for a duck gun, the rough finish might be beneficial.

Cpileri, are you wanting this for a pistol or shotgun? If a shotgun for hunting, search for the thread I mentioned above and you might like that approach.

yeah but

dont you have to cook gunkote?
I was thinking of something that wouldn't require a spare oven.

Go to their site, I think it says you can, but don't have to. It will cure on its own.

brownells

Brownells description says you have to pre-heat to 100 then bake at 300. Is there another link to alternate directions?

Oops I guess I was giving the wrong info. I was referring to Dura-coat. Here is some info from ccr-refinishing.com 's site.

Dura-Coat

DuraCoat is the latest in firearm finishing technology.
No other commercially manufactured and packaged firearm
finishing system has the combination of versatility, durability,
and user friendly characteristics of DuraCoat.

We have an ever expanding line of standard colors. DuraCoat
can also be custom tinted to any color on the planet

Duracoat comes in a standard matte or semigloss (HK) finish.
We can custom manufacture any sheen level. DuraCoat can
be applied to ferrous metals, alloys, synthetics, woods and more.

No preheating required, but it can be preheated.
No baking required, but it can be baked.

Gun-Kote is picky on prep, application, and curing but is very very durable if done right.

I had all the proper tools and this is what I ended up with:

It's used by a lot of big-name companies as their "proprietary home grown uber-coating".
