I’m not sure what was going on at the time, but obviously even then there were enough anti-gun people running around to cause some concern.

I recently bought a bunch of 60's era Guns and Ammo magazines. Amazing how the editorials are so similar about gun control.
Yep, the NRA could transcribe parts of editorials from the American Rifleman of the 30s and 60 (really any year because there have always been control proposals), update the language a bit, and publish it in the October 2020 issue.

I've been around longer than I care to admit, and some things never change, especially the propensity of liberals to attempt gun control. Nor do their methods of accomplishing their goal by taking advantage of every crisis.

NRA has been at the forefront of these skirmishes as long as I can remember. Before computers, keeping members informed of attempts to infringe upon their rights was accomplished by mailings and monthly legislative section of the American Rifleman such as this one from 1954:

skip to 1968:

Fortunately, with the advent of computers, NRA is still keeping us informed but in real time:

They say there is nothing new under the sun, and this is true when it comes to the determination of the anti-gunners to destroy the 2nd Amendment. As stated in Flintshooter's article, "The time is now.............."

A few years ago, a friend at work gave me an old, circa 1962 U.N. pamphlet which stated the goal was total confiscation of small arms from civilians world-wide. It opened my eyes into how long this struggle has been going on and how deep it goes. Unfortunately, since my move, the pamphlet was either thrown out or misplaced since I haven't been able to locate it.

When the OP article was written, the only federal law was NFA'34

Did not have to be a federally-licensed dealer; no 4472, no bound books, no assertions of State of residence, none of that, and we stumbled along for another 16 years before that became such dire necessity as to require brand new Federal law.

It goes back to the League of nations from WWI
Actually gun control first raised it's ugly head in America at the behest of King George III. ;)

Right on, Cap'n, prior to the 1968 Gun Control Act we lived in a different world in which we could order firearms to be delivered to your door by the postman.

It's been a long fight, unfortunately with no end in sight.

I have some early-mid 60's American Rifleman.....same, they could be written today.

I still have the "postman" deliver firearms to my door....well really the UPS man, but same same.

And "America" was not its own country when ole' George said....you colonials are getting a little wild.....one must understand the difference between being english and being in a land they ruled.....just ask....well any of their colonies subjects....note the word subject.

Good point, but George gave the anti''s their idea. ;)

**Assume you are an ffl @fpgt72? There were no restrictions on mail-order firearms in the good ol days, and I cannot recall ever hearing of a "mass shooting". Guess what, folks (as uncle Joe, would say prior to making a point) it must be something else. Hint:

Remember that in "The Good Old Days" concealed carry was banned almost everywhere. And I don't mean licensed, I mean BANNED!!!

BTW, in 1792, A book was published with the title:

"Outlawing the pistol."
Sometime mid-60's the law in TX was, "It is a violation to carry a handgun on or about your person, or in your saddle bags, except while travelling." :D Have to admit, we have made progress in that area, but, purchasing firearms, not so much. Suspect the rantings of today's anti's would have a familiar ring to these fellows...........

I tend to think the first modern "mass shooting" as we have them now was 1966. And the world started to change in 1963.

Don't kid yourself, this has been a long time in coming.....you can say one thing about the anti people....they do understand the long game.

It really is amazing how people....and I do mean ALL PEOPLE....look at history and see what they want to see. So many internet historians now with a view of half the picture.

From this and other articles it was more like Unruh did more angry stewing than plotting.
When does the "Modern Era" start, personally I see that as post WWI
