Gun control/Sandy Hook comes up in Miss America pageant..

During the Q&A portion of the competition in tonight's pageant, Miss New York (Brooklyn native Mallory Hytes-Hagan) was asked a question that essentially went like this: "In the wake of the Newtown tragedy, there have been calls for armed guards in every school in the country. Do you think this would make our schools safer?"

The contestant, who would go on to win the crown, answered that she does not believe so (I disagree, but I don't support the idea for logistic reasons.) She goes on to state she believes that more education regarding the "proper use" of firearms, gun safety, and violence, is likely needed (I agree.) She then adds on the phrase "longer waiting periods"; I'm assuming she means between purchase and receipt, but she doesn't say.

Longer than what? For whom? How would they have prevented Newtown? All rhetorical questions, of course.

To her credit, she mentioned neither the NRA nor "assault weapons."

But, hey, the girl can tap; I'll give her that.

She did what beauty queens do best: dance around the issue and do her best not to offend anyone. Guards in the schools offend the left. Taking away the guns offend the right. She tries to give an answer that does neither while still suggesting "something".

I wouldn't take any issue with what she said. Not that I want "longer" waiting periods - we don't have them at all here nor do I want them - I just think she's fine and one of the NRA's greatest missions is education and training, though not in any mandatory form.

Guards in schools should offend the right as well. Heck, government schools should offend the right. I find a pro-limited government with caveats position to be untenable.

Unfortunately, I think this is all too telling for the state of America. The political machine likes government........it's just that the left and right want big government for different purposes.

I couldn't remember her name after the broadcast, so I searched it, clicking on the first link that would load. That's how she was identified; perhaps they should have phrased it "Brooklyn resident", or something..

What else could she possibly say? She, like every other contestant, just says whatever is popular and won't ruffle feathers. Maybe we should be buying maps for children, like that other contestant said several years ago.
