I guess people have realized that this can happen anywhere, that the police can't be everywhere, and that personal protection is their responsibility.

DENVER (KMSP) -

Background checks to buy guns in Colorado have skyrocketed since Friday's movie theater shooting, the Denver Post reports.

Between Friday and Sunday, Colorado's bureau of investigation approved background checks for nearly 2,900 people – a 43 percent increase from the previous weekend.

Firearms instructors are also seeing increased interest in training required for a concealed-carry permit.

One gun store owner says people are telling him they didn't think they needed a gun, until now.

12 people were killed and 58 others injured in the Aurora, Colo. shooting rampage at a packed midnight screening of the new Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises.
