I recently placed an order with Kentucky Gun Company on a handgun that was/is backordered 45-90 days. It unexpectedly shipped already after less than 2 weeks. As a result, my FFL is going to be out of town on a trip when the gun will arrive in all likelihood. She is having her mail held for pickup for the next week and the handgun was shipped USPS.

Anyone else have this happen? Wasn't sure if it would be able to be held like normal mail or if it would be shipped back because of what it is and needing a signature. KGC said they would accept it back and reship when my FFL was available to receive it, but they will charge me $20 for shipping, which I totally understand.

I had it happen once and it went fine. The carrier makes three attempts and got it delivered on the second try.

But that was FedEx. I have no idea how the US Postal Service does it. I have had notes left to go to thus and so post office to sign for the package. But none have been guns.

Is the package marked "CONTENTS FIREARM? No. It should be held until the dealer returns from his/her trip. Normally mail I believe is returned after thirty days but when we travel for an extended period, my postmaster understands to hold our mail, regardless of the calendar, until we return.

Should not be a problem.

Thanks, that's good to hear. I have no problem with paying the $20 if it has to be reshipped, but obviously would like to avoid it if I can. One of the downsides to using a home-based FFL, but I like supporting them to keep them in business as they do more than just transfers and I have bought from them before.

I agree. Shouldn't be a problem. Post offices vary regarding how long they will hold your mail. They are only required to hold it 30 days. Some will return it after 30 days no matter what you ask them to do. I know because I ask my post office to hold my mail 10 weeks and they said they would. When I got home they had returned everything after 30 days. I had tax statements and lots of other stuff that I had to chase down.

Call them and talk to the postmaster. Ask them to hold it. I bet they will.

I also use a home based FFL. He's gone 3 months a year just like I am.

When I'm going to be out of town I notify the carriers (FecEx, UPS, USPS) to hold my stuff until I get back, then delivery my first day open. No problem.

Of course, you -do- have to tell them. (I do it all on-line) I let the drivers know as well.

Well, not sure if USPS will hold it or not. Looks like they tried to deliver it yesterday and left a notice. I think shippers can stipulate "return after ___ days if not delivered," so I'm wondering if that's what KGC did. I'll be annoyed if I have to pay the $20 but it's a difficult situation all around. I ordered expecting 45 days at least before it shipped, so my FFL had no way of knowing she'd need to let me know she'd be out of town, and KGC just got it out to me faster than expected. Just kinda sucks I'm the one that gets hit with the extra cost, but even with that I still got a good deal.

Ya, I believe that's what my FFL did, she said she was having them hold her mail.

I once ordered a gun into my FFL after forgetting she was going to be gone the entire next month.
She had made arrangements beforehand to have the mail held. it was sent via usps.
It was there a month later when she got back.
I would bet if your FFL made arrangements that yours will be there too.

I can only imagine the truckload of guns my FFL had to pick up after she got back, and what if any extra measures the post office took to secure the arsenal that stacked up throughout the month.

It should be held by the post office just like the rest of the mail until the recipiant returns.
Should not be a problem.

Well, the main lesson I learned was not to trust backorder estimates. Not sure if that is the lesson you were talking about. Or, not using a home based FFL I suppose.

I make it to be inform the carriers that you will be gone. We've done this for years and never had a problem.
