Gun show today in Morrisville , VT. Pretty small by most peoples standards, I would guess. About 25 vendors in a small gym. Very busy! People shoulder to shoulder around the tables, lots of long gun sales happening. I think the selecion was pretty typical for VT. Not too many handguns, mostly Glocks and revolvers. I was really hoping for a 10MM, but none to be seen. Hunting rifles as far as you can see. I can't really understand why one would buy a new bolt action hunting rifle around here. The selection of like new used w/ nice scopes was staggering. The hot sellers seemed to be battle rifles and .22 autoloaders. Saw lots of SKS and Ak's, few FN's and M44's, one or two AR's heading out the door. Maybe people feeling a little necessity for Homeland Defense.
I picked up a good condition (little dirty) ruger 77/22 w/ bushnell 3x-9x variable scope and four magazines for $340. Doesn't look like it was shot much, just not cleaned. No pitting in the bore I dont think. No rust. Its the blued model w/ walnut stock, but it must be an older model as it also has fold down iron sights, which the current catalog lists only w/ syn stock. I can't wait to try it out tommorrow. How did I do on the price? Any goodies the THR 77/22 owner shouldn't be seen without? What do you think the maximum effective range for this set up will be? Thanks for looking. I'll post a shooting report tommorrow.

I was at the morrisville show today also. I guess I was spoiled as I went to gun shows in syracuse ny when I went to school there. I wasn't expecting anything to that degree but I didn't buy anything. I did see a nice smith model 13 I debated buying. I have the 77/22 all weather and I don't normally shoot targets beyond 50 yards with it though. Since you said effective I assume you mean for hunting and I don't have any input for that.

Peter, both of mine needed a trigger job, but with the caveat that I need a light trigger. That's about it - looks like a good price to me. I've had good luck with CCI ammo in my 77/22s.

Max effective range depended on the target and the cartridge energy. Groups at 100m were pretty tight. With high dollar target ammo both were sub 1.5 MOA rifles. With my favored CCI SGB ammo, both came close in accuracy and picked up more "smack" due to the SWC profile. Each .22 is an individual though.

Caramba!

$60 for 77/22 mags???

Aren't they just 10/22 mags with a different plastic bit to match the stock profile of the 77/22?

Yes, they are the same. In 2 77/22s and one 10/22 they have all interchaged fine. I just threw all of them in a box and used which ever one came to hand.
