Gun Store Exemption from Illinois Shutdown

I had some work done by the gunsmith at one of the larger LGS' in the Chicago area. I dropped it off a few weeks ago, prior to things getting bad, otherwise I would have waited. I called over the weekend and it was at least a 3 hour wait as their lines were unbelievable. I spoke to them again this morning to make sure they were open, and they are, but for shortened hours. They suggested getting there early as they're limiting the number of customers they're letting in to help curb the spread of the virus. I'll run over there either tomorrow or Wednesday.

Before anyone starts heaping praises on Gov P, remember he is the bozo that signed the "dead" 2019 bill for gun dealer state licensing that effectively eliminated half the gun shops in the state, signed the red flag law and promised to sign any and all anti gun laws put before him. Next up, the "fix the Foid law" which will require fingerprints and another background check for new cards or renewals plus outlaw person to person transfers. No friend of ours. S

I stopped at my LGS today to pick up my gun. They did a great job organizing everything, communicating with those of us waiting and trying to accomodate everyone, but after waiting in line for an hour in the cold with another 2 hour wait ahead of me I left and will try again next week.

I live in the the most liberal county in Florida and also ground zero of our COVID-19 pandemic, Broward County. They have shut down all non-essential businesses but have left the gun stores open meaning they are "essential". Its not like they have anything left in stock anyways unless you are in the market for a nice thousand dollar over and under or maybe a 270 WSM for that Elk trip you'll never take.

Gun Shops in Illinois can be 'open', and lots of ammunition has been going out the door, but three of my last five Background Checks (BGC) remained pending so the 'sold' firearms cannot leave the shop. For some buyers the BGC approval takes less than a minute, but over half (in my limited experience) come back 'pending'. With the mandatory Illinois three day waiting period it is almost never a problem with a one or two day delay. Illinois state law requires a BGC approval before a firearm transfer can be made, no matter how long it takes. One of the three customers was 'pending' for eight (8) days before his approval came through this morning. The two others will be seven days tomorrow. Eight days is three days longer than any other BGC I have requested since the State Police went to computer inquiry in 2015.

But .. it did finally come through, so they are still manually processing requests, just backed up a bit longer than usual.

People are not self regulating and since we have not even started this virus deal yet, I am all for doing what is needed to get people to do what they should for our community. This Is not a time to thump your chest, the hospitals are already balancing at the top of the needle... it’s mostly or your grandparents, transplant patients, cancer patients, others with multiple diagnosis’ so let’s help each other out a bit.
There’s a reason the Chinese beat and shot people that went out in public. Welded doors shut, tore up roads so people couldn’t travel. Now it’s under control there.

Not that I need any more guns or ammo, but I had time to kill on a rainy day
And we have idiots here that bitch and whine because a gun shop is shut down. Damn. Just saw a thing on the news that New York hospitals look like a war zone. Patients are stacking up in hallways. They brought in refrigerated semi trailers to handle the bodies

But, you gotta go fondle a bunch of guns because you’re bored.
