Was able to snag a new model Blackhawk off GB this week. 4 5/8, stainless , 45 colt. Did some digging and doesn't seem like there is a whole lot of them around . Anyways want to my LGS today to look at it and grab a receipt tso I can have it added to my permit down at the clerk's office.

Anyways loading gate is definitely stiff, lock up is nice and solid. However the hammer is real funky. It too is very stiff, but it also seems like it kinda has a hitch in it. When cocking at a normal rate it just kind feels stiff and almost gritty. When going very slow it's extra stiff and right about 1/3-1/2 way ish it almost stops and becomes very difficult to cock. Almost felt like a main spring dragging or somethjng. I removed the grips and everything seems to be moving as it should under the grip. But the spring was covered In a White grease. So I'm wondering if maybe it's just chunky grease affecting the hammer? Other thing that concerns me is the side of the hammer looks to have been polished and the grip frame has definitely been removed at some point by looking it it's screws. So idk . Will pick it up next week some time. Was going to pull the frame off and brake clean the crap out of it and oil it up and see what that does. I'm mechanically inclined, but don't exactly know what to look for in this case. Any suggestions or thoughts on what it could be?

I did remove and reinstall the cylinder and that didn't charge me anything. I did some googling and could it bee the cylinder latch spring is out of wack so the pawl isn't retracting enough? I didn't think to look at it. The gun store was mobbed today.

This is one of those guns you don't buy unless you WANT to work on it and buy parts for it. Sounds like someone has been inside that gun. It can most likely be fixed if you understand how Ruger Blackhawks work and if some dude didn't take a Dremel or a rusty file to the internals.

It's already mine. To late for that.

Worst case I'll send it to Ruger. If it's trully messed up maybe it'll make a base for a custom job. I got it for 410 bucks.

Check the transfer bar if the base pin spring is not strong or is sticking the transfer bar will catch about halfway through the hammer cock. Tilt the gun forward it will catch worse, tilt the gun back muzzle up and it will cock smoothly no catch. The little spring loaded pin presses the transfer bar away from the frame if it is worn or too short, you may need a new base pin.

Thanks, will definitely try that

Well just an update. Was able to pick the gun up today. Tipping it forward and back made no difference. I completely disassembled it, brake cleaned the snoth out of everything, lightly oiled and re assembled the gun. I watch 3 different videos to make sure I did it right. The cylinder latch isn't quite as stiff but there is definitely something up with the hammer. It's stiff and sounds/feels all wrong. Something is amiss. So dropped it back off at my LGS tonight and they are sending it off to Ruger. Hopefully all works out.

Got the gun back the other day. Had to pay to ship it to Ruger, but all other costs Ruger covered. She's nice and smooth now. So for a grand total of 505 bucks total I got a new Blackhawk, that's been through ruger , can't complain about that. I did find out it was made in 1993 too.

Hopefull will get out to shoot it soon. Put a set of eagle gunfighter grips on it. It feels great! Will have to get some decent pics. Here's a quick shot I grabbed the other day along with my newly acquired single six. And another shot of my revolver collection as it stands.

Ruger has excellent customer service. They usually go completely any gun sent to them and do all necessary corrections to get it back to factory specs. If you want an even lighter trigger, try Wolfe springs, easy to install, I got 3 different wt springs so I could get the best feel without ending up with light primer strikes.

Nice collection. What did Ruger do to correct it?
The work order said " removed metal shard" and cleaned gun. The thing is I completely dissassembled the gun, brake cleaned it all down, scrubbed with a nylon brush, lubricated and re assembled. o_O. I'm a mechanic by trade so I usually pickup on things like that.

The other odd thing is I called them on Friday after afternoon around 330pm to find out progress and if i owed money. They said they had not received the gun yet. But than on Tuesday my LGS guy texted me at 11am saying my gun was there. That was real quick, but than again NH isny very far from upstate NY. Also the fact I didn't charge me for a foreign shard? Sounds fishy. But honestly don't matter they fixed it, and didn't charge me so I'm not complaining. Great customer service IMO.

Years back, had a friend buy a Ruger P85, for $50, owner said it's dangerous, shoots with safety on, gun looked well used even abused, but was on Ruger recall list, friend sent it in, paid both ways by Ruger and gun was returned re-blued and looking like new, all they really had to do was fix the recall part, but they made a lifetime Ruger customer by going the extra mile.

Glad you got it resolved quickly. I had a similar trigger problem to what you described in a new SP101 recently and sent it to NH. The hammer dog was replaced by Ruger and the end shake adjusted. They sent prepaid shipping label immediately and I got the gun to FedEx on Saturday. Ruger got it Monday. I got it back that Friday fixed, no charge. QC lets a few defective guns slip out of the factory but CS does a great job correcting the problems.

Can attest to rugers cs. Fast, friendly and fix it correctly. Had an undersize bore with a rough spot 1/2 inch in front of forcing cone on a super redhawk bought new a month before noticing leading like ive never seen. One week there and back, a new barrel and no fuss.

...."removed metal shard"... If they would only de burr and check every gun for metal shards BEFORE they ship them out. Ruger has had this problem for a very long time.
