American Rifleman within the last few months had an article that discussed this. Worth reading. The jist of it was less frequent cleaning and things worked fine and were accurate. For home defense, in general, I like to clear it on the same weekend after I use it. There are good arguments that after you clean your HD firearm, you should go back and fire some rounds through it to enusre it works properly after being reassembeled.

Only after I have poured wet baby powder in my Glock's action, frozen it in ice and dropped from 10,000 feet and then immediately fired 100,000 rounds through it in a single session do I find it requires cleaning.

I'm fairly diligent about cleaning my guns. I clean them every 1000 rds, whether it needs it or not. :D

After every range session. How thorough depends on the range count 50 or less and I just snake it, more than 50 it gets the full monty. My carry gun gets cleaned monthly whether I shoot it or not.

after every use. Regardless of the amount of rounds. When I'm done, I go home and I clean.
I clean every couple of months whether they've been used or not.
I want to be sure they are ready to go when I need them. Not just when I want them.
That's what I was taught to do since I fired my first gun. Too old to change now....but I don't like using any type of wire brush on the bore or anywhere else. If you clean it after each use is there really a need for that?

The pistol on the bottom is my EDC. I got it from a buddy for a song ($500), and then decided to see how long it ran without only a little oil every now and then. At 5,000 rounds, I was tired of waiting for it to jam so I decided to clean it.

I had to bead blast it to get it clean...

My guns get cleaned based on disgustingness, my need to see something, or how long they have been sitting around since their last use without cleaning.

There are a couple exceptions. I reload using fast powders, and can't be bothered switching for .45. So my .45 gets cruddier faster. The gun doesn't need cleaning before the yuck factor sets in, but the mags do.

The only gun I have that NEEDS cleaning frequenlty is my desert eagel. Even with clean burning ammo, at about 300 rounds it becomes a jam-o-matic.
