Hi all,

I'm researching shotgun storage options right now. I have an 870 that is used for home defense (18" bbl in thas mode) as well as clay shooting (28" bbl in this mode). I have found the GunVaault for a quick-access solution:

I figure I could mount this pretty-much anywhere in my bedroom closet, but I worry about it covering the receiver and this causing rust. Has anyone else used this before, and do you recommend it?

I like those V-Line in-wall shotgun safes too, and considering one of those, but does anyone have first-hand experience with the GunVaault for long guns? Thanks!

Chris

I have no personal experience using them.
The rust issue would be depended on your moisture in you area.

On the lifejacket gun locks they are CA aproved but they are mostly plastic. I know I own 2 of them and they would be easy to break if I had to get them off.

I purchased a Long GunVault about a year ago but have not used it. The interior is mostly plastic and it's not like it's air tight so I can't really see it contributing to rust. Bought for $30 or so at Sportsmans Guide as mentioned above.

I have the Mossberg lock-box and have been very happy with it. Not quite as "ready" since you can't store with one in the chamber and it requires a key, but I open it at night and lock it in the morning. It was also in the low $30 range.

I have one of the long gunvaults. It works well on my mid '90s vintage 870. No rust issues. It does eat the batteries rather quickly though, so be sure to find an appropriate external power adaptor, and keep fresh batteries in it for a backup if the power goes out.

What do you use for an external power adaptor?

I use an old 12v adaptor that came from some old gel cell battery charger. I just had cut and resplice the wires to swap the +/- on the tip, since the gunvault has the polarity backwards compared to most of the power adaptors I had in my big box o' adaptors(tm) that I've collected over the years. I've also found that old IBM thinkpad power adaptors work in a pinch, and they are already the right polarity.

If I were to buy one, I'd probably get one of these at the Radio Shack, since I think they let you choose one free tip (at least they used to, take the vault with you to test, it uses a rather big size), and you can change the polarity by just turning the tip 180 degrees.
