H&R 922

I have a H&R 922 and I would like to know the year that it was manufactured.
From the Internet I have found that it was most likely manufactured between 1925-1937. Can anyone narrow it down farther?
Stamped on the left side of the barrel is:
H&R Arms Company
Worcester, Mass. USA
H.&R. 922

It has an Octagonal 6" barrel with a brass blade front sight.
It has 2 piece checkerd walnut grips with a swell near the top and squared butt.
The Serial # is on the front strap of the grip and is1269xx

Barrel lengths; 6-inch on later production; early model, 10-inch barrel.

Safety cylinder and round barrel on later models, earlier production had octagon barrel.

Discontinued prior to 1942.

Looks like you have a later earlier model; or an earlier later model. Okay, maybe it's a transitional model. I don't know, I just type what's in the book - and I checked and rechecked what I typed above. And what is a safety cylinder anyway? John

The safety cylinder was H&R's answer to the recess for the case heads that S&W used in their .22's. Both were in response to problems with early .22 "high speed" cartridges that sometimes burst at the rims.

The safety cylinder has a ridge around the cylinder at the rear, with the rest of the cylinder recessed. That contained any gas escape from a burst case head.

FWIW, I agree that that is an early gun, with the octagon barrel and the wood grip. They made a second issue from 1950 through 1982; it has a round barrel and plastic grips.

H&R model 922

I have a H&R model 922 my dad gave me. The SN is N 12XXX it has a 2" round barrel and plastic grips, 9 shot .22. I have not been able to find any info on age as all I can find is the same in a 2.5" octagonal sided barrel. Can anybody give more info?

defender50, my information shows the letter 'N' in the serial number represents 1953. Hope this helps!
