H&R Shikari vs. H&R Handi Rifle?

Aragon,

I am not an expert on the NEF-H&R rifles but I think the Shikari was made on the "SB1" cast iron shotgun frame before New England Firearms was bought by the revitalized H&R1871 company. NEF brought out the Handi-rifle with heat-treated tougher alloy steel receiver shortly after producing the Shakari. The Shikari model was dropped in 1981 and re-introduced as the Handi-rifle with more center-fire cartridge choices. NEF was "absorbed" by H&R1871 in the mid-90s.

Aragon,

Curator is correct. I have a 44 mag Shikari. It is definitely on the lighter SB1 frame. The rod underneath is a cleaning rod.

Also the link he provided is the best source for all things H&R.
Kirk.

Thanks for the information on the SB1 vs. SB2 frames. For what it's worth, I highly doubt the SB1 frame is made from cast iron. That would be a horrible application of a material to a function. I'm quite certain both are made from steel.

The Shikari is only safe with trapdoor level loads. That's the main difference you need to be concerned about. The SB2 models are approved for stouter loads, although your shoulder may not be.
