H&R topper 48

I've got an H&R topper 48 that won't fire. The hammer falls when you pull the trigger but stops and won't push the firing pin much. I'm guessing it's a weak hammer spring probably or has someone experienced this and was it something else? I can push the hammer when it's down as far as it'll go and it'll push the firing pin and then bounce back if I let go of it. Maybe the spring has gotten too short or compressed and isn't pushing it far enough. Anyone know what type of spring this takes (and where to get it) and a parts diagram/schematic before I try to disassemble it and replace it? I've come across a couple different type of springs made for different H&R single shots.

It's supposed to do that.

It's called a rebounding hammer, and is designed to keep the hammer from resting on the firing pin & primer with a round in the chamber.

I'd suggest you check the firing pin first and see if it's broke in the middle.

Okay, got it fixed (for now anyways). It was a simple coil spring for the hammer. Wolffs springs showed a really odd looking spring but it must be for later models I guess. Added some washers to increase tension and now it seems to be working, though I may of put too much tension on it. Before, when it was fired, the firing pin never protruded at all (I understand the firing pin is supposed to pop back out and not stay out, but it didn't protrude at all when fired before), so it wasn't setting off the primers in the shells. I think it'll work now from the look and feel of it, but I'll look for a new coil spring for it too.

I must say though: this gun is a pain to work on. Really tricky to get the parts back together, like the trigger/etc.

I've seen that problem a couple of time with those guns and I have seen people take the spring out and stretch it and it always seemed to work fine.
