Armed opponents of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide chant anti-government slogans in the streets of Gonaives, 62 miles,100 kilometers north of the capital Port-au-Prince, Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, a day after an armed opposition group took control of Haiti's fourth-largest city in the biggest uprising yet aimed at the overthrow Aristide. Is that a spear on the right?

If we're looking at the same thing, I believe that's the silhouette of a sling (belonging to the garand to the right).
It's a bit twisted at the top, giving it a tapered appearance.

There's also a sling attached to the rifle in the middle (which doesn't look to be a garand IMHO), though very difficult to see.

Unless its a spear made out of OD greed canvas with a sling attachment on the end then Snowdog is 100% right.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and bet that the bandoleer, is prolly because they are using them a single shot rifles. Think about it; when you have to bury your weapons for years in a third world country.............how many en-bloc's do you think your gonna have? The suprising thing is that they have any .30 ammo at all, let alone loaded en-bloc clips.

Back when Bill (Perjurer In Chief) Clinton sent troops into Haiti the talking heads on the news described the M1, over and over, as "obsolete."
Interesting to see that they're still in use.

(None of the newsnitwits offered to stand out at 200 yards and let someone fire a few rounds at them with one of those obsolete rifles, of course.)

Didn't Bill Clinton solve the problems in Haiti?

Back to the Garand, it looks like the wood is missing most if not all of it's oil finish. That and the metal looks in surprisingly good condition. If I didn't know any better, judging by the rifle in the rear, I would bet that these were ARSENAL guns that were handed to the guys shortly before the shot was taken. It almost looks like the shot was staged!

BTW, the sling sure looked like a spear at first glance too.

An anti Aristide armed rebel walks beside the corpse of a lynched police officer in Gonaives, Haiti, some 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of Port-au-Prince, Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004. Police clashed Saturday with rebels who have occupied this city for two days, and the insurgents promised to keep fighting until Aristide steps down. (AP Photo/Rodrigo Abd)

Someone tell those rebels that I'll give them an unissued Yugo SKS and 200 rounds on stripper clips in trade for one of those Garands.

Think they'll accept my C&R license? :D
