Thousands of Lost Lives; America's Landmark Assault Weapons Law Hangs In the Balance

Washington, DC - Across America, mothers and others are organizing buses, stapling flyers in the supermarkets, calling into radio shows and organizing local press conferences. They're securing entertainment talent, stuffing envelopes in church basements and calling their representatives in Congress.

The message to all: Mother's Day in Washington will be the kickoff of the mother of all grassroots efforts -- a relentless campaign to get President Bush and Congress to save the assault weapons ban and take other steps to protect our neighborhoods and our children from gun violence that takes the lives of almost 30,000 Americans a year.

In 162 days, barring Congressional action, military-style assault weapons now banned by law will be legal again. Just in time for America's children to go back to school, Uzis and AK-47s will be for sale legally again.

The chapter-based grassroots Million Mom March organization will demonstrate on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol on Mother's Day, May 9, to begin a national drive to save the law -- with a particular focus on getting President Bush to keep his campaign pledge to renew it. Among the notables who have agreed to speak are parents of children lost at Columbine High School, authors, law enforcement leaders, faith-based leaders and women's leaders. A detailed lineup of speakers will be released at a later date.

"The President's men keep saying 'the President's position is clear,'" says Shikha Hamilton, a single mother from Detroit, Michigan who is the official spokeswoman of the 2004 Mother's Day March to Halt the Assault. "Those of us who hear gunfire in the middle of the night would appreciate a little more clarity. There's no sensible, rational explanation to let this law expire."

The Mother's Day activities will begin at 10 a.m. with an interfaith service and continue at 11 with testimonials from victims of gun violence, remarks by other gun safety advocates, and entertainment throughout the afternoon. Details as available will be included in future media advisories and also posted at www.mmm2004.com.

The evening before Mother's Day (Sat., May 8), Million Mom March members and other supporters will gather at the first-ever "NRA Blacklist Ball" in Washington D.C., a fundraiser for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence united with the Million Mom March. The event's name plays off the blacklist of people and groups the NRA maintains on its website. (For more, see www.nrablacklist.com.)

The founder of the first Million Mom March, Donna Dees-Thomases, has just published a book about her experience. Looking For a Few Good Moms was just published by Rodale Press.

"If America's mothers fail to make themselves heard, then just around the time we're stocking up on back-to-school supplies next September, terrorists, drug lords, and the mentally unstable will be able to stock up on assault weapons that can wipe out a school yard full of kids in a matter of minutes," Dees-Thomases wrote in the book's closing. "As mothers, we cannot let that happen."

News media wishing to produce advance stories or packages on the March plans are invited to contact Rob Wilcox of the Million Mom March united with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence at 202-898-0792. The organization can set up interviews with Million Mom Marchers in scores of cities around the country.

Credentialing for press who wish to cover the march will follow with a separate media advisory to be shipped to news outlets April 12.

As the nation's largest national, non-partisan, chapter-based grassroots organization leading the fight to prevent gun violence, the Million Mom March united with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence is dedicated to creating an America free from gun violence, where all Americans are safe at home, at school, at work, and in their communities.

Gotta love the moms. At their first march, there were thousands of men with guns waiting to meet them, but nobody said anything about that. I'm sure it'll be the same this time.

Blood pressure spike:
Just in time for America's children to go back to school, Uzis and AK-47s will be for sale legally again.
As for the rest of it, I know that this piece isn't a passage from one of the villains' speeches in The Fountainhead, but boy, does the style ever fit.
Sure is hard to see with this straw man stapled to my forehead. I shouldn't complain; I just do it because I'm so mean.

Goldman Fund Supports Gun Control on Two Fronts
2/5/2004

The Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund recently awarded a total of $300,000 to support gun-control efforts.

Under its violence-prevention program area,
the foundation awarded $200,000 to the

Violence Prevention Center for a public-education campaign
in support of the federal assault-weapons ban.

Also, the fund gave $100,000 to the Center for
Gun Policy and Research of Baltimore, Md., to support public-health commissioners' work to reduce gun violence.

The foundation also made grants in the areas of children and youth, conservation and environment, elderly, Israel, reproductive health, and social services.

The first act of a criminal government....

...is to disarm the people. As far back as gun control started infringing the rights of the honest to bear arms dates the point where the government thought of itself as going criminal.

The Million Moron March folks would be picketing automobile manufacturers if they were really worried about death to children. They are only interested in furthering our slide into tyrany. They are anti-liberty and, therefore, anti-American.

The tranquility of tyranny is much more attractive than the chaos of liberty to these demented fools. Now the question is: "Do we have a million fools or will the pro-tyranny press fake it again?"

...gun violence that takes the lives of almost 30,000 Americans a year.
Anybody care to guess what orifice they got this statistic from? 30k a year from gun violence? I guess suicides count as 'gun violence'...

I wonder how many people die of 'ladder violence', swimmingpool/lake/river violence', 'automobile violence', 'drug overdose violence', 'heart disease violence', 'cancer violence', etc, yet the million mommies aren't doing anything to stop any of these deaths.

You forgot "doctor malpractice violence." Actually, given that, as far as I can tell, the leading causing of non-natural causes deaths in this country is stupidity (not always on the part of the people who die, either), why don't we just outlaw stupidity?

"Those of us who hear gunfire in the middle of the night would appreciate a little more clarity. There's no sensible, rational explanation to let this law expire."

Then get your head out of the clouds. For clarity sake "CRIMINALS DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR LITTLE LAW"

For clarity sake "CRIMINALS DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR LITTLE LAW"

Among six choices of what they believed to be the greatest risk to their children's long-term health and quality of life, 5.6 percent of parents chose "being overweight or obese." More parents selected other choices as the greatest risk: alcohol (6.1 percent), sexually transmitted disease (10 percent), smoking (13.3 percent), violence (20.3 percent), and illegal drugs (24 percent).

In terms of their own behavior, 61 percent of parents said that it would be either "not very difficult" or "not at all difficult" to change their eating and/or physical activity patterns if it would help prevent obesity in any of their children.

Link...

Spend your "It feels so good to really make difference..." marching time with your kids teaching them the value of personal responsibility. Teach them to eat healthy and exercise instead of feeding them "garbage" and sticking them in front of the TV/Video Game because you are to busy propping up your self worth. I know that some are doing all they can to make ends meet and can't spend as much time with their kids as they would like but this is not one of those cases.

Its always easier to blame others (big scary guns) instead of doing the things that you need to do personally to make a difference.

terrorists, drug lords, and the mentally unstable will be able to stock up on assault weapons

:what:

Pretty sure convitcted felons, i.e. known drug dealers, terrorists, and people whom had been committed were already precluded under existing law.:scrutiny:

Oh that's right! They don't care about rule of law! :banghead:

"terrorists, drug lords, and the mentally unstable will be able to stock up on assault weapons that can wipe out a school yard full of kids in a matter of minutes"

Last time I checked these people had mothers too. There are mothers and there are mothers. And some mothers are plain unfit or utterly naive.

<Insert the clip of the producer in The Godfather waking up with a horse-head in his bed here.>

The law is in effect now, and you hear gunfire in the night. The answer is to keep the law around?!?! The logical circles are blowing neurons and synapses in my head left and right! I'll soon be as stupid as they are! :)

Just what we need the million morans walking the streets again. if there so worried about gun violance let um march though detroit to the mayors office and talk about the violance in general here lately..im sure that wont happen though

The chapter-based grassroots Million Mom March organization will demonstrate on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol on Mother's Day, May 9
Well, this time, lets get an irrefutably accurate count of the 170,000 Street Walkers, please.

Will Oleg be leading his local chapter to Washington while wearing his MOLON LABE hat? As so many of us have signed up why don't we flood the protest with our people in Washington? Should be good for a few laughs!

Um, this is an outright lie. Criminals will not be able to get guns any more after the AWB sunsets than they will beforehand.
