Handgun JHP performance summary (CHART)

Good point about the linearity of the curve - I'm very happy to see these similarities between the handgun rounds as this is feeding into some shortly forthcoming work.

The 9x18mm Police is actually a 0.355" bullet so you can use 380ACP JHPs or 9x19mm JHPs as desired. I suspect the Makarov cartridge would be very similar in performance. 10ft distance.

One of the things that is (or should be!) surprising is the velocity from a production pistol barrel and how its interaction with a given load can vary the velocity significantly. Our barrel blanks consistently give 5-7% higher velocities than production pistol barrels of the same length. How important is 5-7% velocity in a handgun? What if it's that 5-7% person who is trying to kill you at that moment? All of the shots depicted on the chart were from production (mid-range price) handguns - some are faster and some are slower and this varies from gun to gun. I will go ahead and say it - if you were to take a very 'fast' 4" 9x19mm barrel and a fire +P+ 124gr ammunition (which matches well with that particular barrel), your terminal performance would be equal to a .357MAG 4" barrel shooting 'mis-matched' 125gr ammo.

We'd like to get more 10mm Auto shots in. There is interest, but we need to fit it in with an existing test unless someone would like to sponsor the analysis ($400 for a three shot analysis of a given caliber and cartridge type in the high speed gelatin, filmed in high speed of course.)

If you had to guess on say a 165gr 10mm @ 1450 FPS/ 750 LBS where would it fall on the charts?

This is fascinating stuff. Have you ever considered expanding and compiling this into a book?

I would think information on terminal performance of commercial loads out of production guns at various engagement distances would be extremely interesting to the law enforcement community as well as CCW civilians. One would hope that the pistol manufacturers themselves would also find it valuable, but that might be too much to hope for.

A book is a good idea - maybe some time in the future.

We're always interested in expanding operations, and to increase the amount of publically-available data that we can share with THR and on the website.

Regarding the demand, it's basically like this : you either believe in the scientific method or you don't. Luckily most people believe in approaching research in a methodical manner. Only a small minority are happy when their amps 'Go to 11' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbVKWCpNFhY, and it seems that group cannot be convinced regardless of the data or how it is presented.

Jeff, you leave my 1955 tube amp alone!!:fire::cuss::uhoh:

Besides... I had my knob modified so my amp now goes to 13 and it sure does make a difference.:neener::D:neener::D
