Can anyone recommend an apartment-friendly short safe for handguns? Not sure about price range yet, I don't even know if something like this exists. Everything I look at is either too heavy to move (potentially yearly), or is built for rifles (the ~$350 Sentry) with no shelves.

And since I don't need the height for rifles (mil-surps can hide in the closet, the good ones can go to my parents' house and their real safe), it would be nice to have it short enough to serve another purpose (end table, nightstand, etc.).

I'm thinking of something about the size of a mini-fridge, maybe?

I've seen mini-fridge sized safes at office supply stores. They are designed for document storage and offer some fire protection. Check out OfficeMax or Staples if you have one in your area.

Do not use safes designed for document storage for the storage of firearms. These safes are designed with a moisture rich insulation which results in high internal humidity levels. They are also not secure, short of the higher end units (none of the office supply stores sell the higher end units).

Believe it or not, safes have existed for a few years prior to the invention of the gun safe :D

There are many types of smaller safes which would be suitable for the storage of handguns. These safes are typically available through safe companies, and not sporting goods stores or other big box retailers.

You can use the link in my signature to see some of what is available. I would also be happy to point you towards a local safe company.

GunVault style is what you're looking for. WalMart has the DAC in this style for 1/2 price of GunVault. There are also the mechanical push-button style. Your local gun dealer should have some.
