I currently keep my bedside handgun in its plastic case in my nightstand. However, my wife and I are expecting our first child (daughter in January) and I feel I need to get a quick access handgun safe. (for obvious reasons)

I've looked around the internet some, and found a couple. The two I am looking at right now are:

V-line Top Draw and the Dual-Safe.

Does anybody have either of these? Is there one that I haven't found that's better than either?

Any info/opinions will be much appreciated.
TIA,
RT

Have not used either of those, but have been using a GunVault for five years or more with no hitches at all. Touch-combination works on battery, and the design has a key bypass so even if the batteries croak you can open it. My GunVault gets opened and shut 2x/day, every day. Pretty good track record, IMO.

Wal-Mart was selling their $70 Gunvalt knock-off for $40 a while back.

It has worked out in the few months I've had it.

I bought a gun vault recently that I'm returning, after this thread, containing a link to a link containing a video of someone opening their gunvault with a bic pen, just like the kryptonite locks.gunvault thread
I know a quick access bedroom gun safe isn't going to be much of a help against someone that really wants to get in there. I want it to keep my curious nieces and nephews from stumbling upon my gun. A lock that can be opened with a .50 bic pen isn't isn't something I'd trust to keep out kids.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate your responses.

I saw a thread about the bic pen thing, and that is a concern. More likely I'd break it myself trying to see if it worked. I'm mostly a big goofy kid about half the time. :)

The dual-safe is cool, but if a kid got ahold of it, I think they would eventually figure out the fake feet mechinism. The more I think about it the better the V-line sounds.

I guess my decision's made. Thanks for all of your input. The wife will sleep sounder now.

I'm in the same boat, but my wife is due in November-

Anybody looked at the "Strong Box Drawer Safe with Quick Access Electronic Lock" from Stack-on? Looks good. Anyone know if the buttons "beep" when you hit them?

That does look good, and a great price. You have to have good eyes though. I don't want to have to see the buttons to punch in the code, because likely as not, if I ever need it in a hurry, my glasses will probably get knocked in the floor. (plan for the worst:eek:) If I still had younger eyes, that would be on top of my list.

Please remember that I have no idea what I'm talking about.:)

Don't use a gun barrel pacifier!! I doubt if it will be a proiblem. Sorry, Im old school, several generations, taught how to raise children, and have.. It included common sense. No safes, no paranoia. Lot's of firearm dicipline for kids. I give up. PC has won. Please don't parent, and having did that, dare to trust your child! Get a safe, give him/her the impression firearms are evil. I GIVE up! I know it is easier to lock up, than teach. Tough ????. You just failed as a parent. Sorry, I won't respond to all you "panties in a wad", new age parents. I'm MUCH to weary!

Red,

I can open the V-Line without looking at it very quickly.

The problem I have with it, and why it will eventually be replaced it that I think it can be cracked by someone with time, such as a teenager.

Another V-line vote.

No batteries, no beeps...opens very quickly.

Re: proof the kids, couldn't agree more, but the problem some face is "other people's kids".

If Johnny comes to visit your "proofed kid", better hope that little Johnny "The Matrix" fan doesn't wander when "proof kid" is taking a "biological respite" from the visit.

My stuff is locked (but rapidly accessible and deployable) because given the risks/rewards and understanding what I can and can't physically control, the alternative is unthinkable.

Stay safe (pun intended ;)),

My kids are taught both, it's not too much for them to learn. Besides, when you or your kids get all your weapons/firearms stolen you'll wish you had taught both.
