Looking to hear from those with lots of experience in BP loading. I load for my 1888 TD and 1874 Pedersoli Sharps in 45-70 and 1874 Shiloh Sharps in 45-90, so I have some good experience but still learning a lot on how BP loads really work.

I guess my main question is how does one properly adjust BP grains based on changing to different lots? I developed a very good load for my 1888 TD with my very first lot of BP and was able to use the Buffington sights almost exactly as designed. 500gr bullets at .459 are the ticket and I directly seat the bullet over 64gr of Swiss 1.5 and don't need to use a compression die. So super easy to load.

Yesterday, I was practicing at 300 yds and used the same 64gr but different lot. It grouped great but it was shooting super high. I had to adjust the sights to around 260ish yds to be on the 18 inch target and 300 yds. My past loads were either on 300 or in between 275 and 300.

I am wondering if a complete load work-up is needed every time a new lot is used or do I stick with my grains and adjust my sights accordingly? Thanks - Tom.

Jim and I do things in a similar fashion.

My suggestion is to work up a good load for both of your 45-70s. Unless yo compete, a good load will be sufficient. Once you have settled on a good load buy 10-20 pounds of the same powder and save it for those loads.

Good luck and enjoy the shooting.

Another question on BP - GOEX is back. Never used it. Seems 1F is the best for BPCR. Does anyone think GOEX is better than Swiss 1.5?

Most of the Goex shooters I knew used 2Fg. I don't know if it is better, but people who worked with it got good shooting. Note that Goex is now owned by Estes and is making powder in the rebuilt plant. Who knows what changes there have been.

Jim for the win, again! The new GOEX has not been available long enough to promote worthwhile comments.

Having said that, if it is available in your area, that is a good thing! A pound will get you about 200 shots, enough for some decent testing. If you like it, buy more.

(edit, 18 January, my fingers hit the wrong keys. It should read 100 shots.)

A lb is 7000 grains so i figure more like 100 shots.

Indeed, fat fingers and a tiny keyboard make for some interesting postings. I proof read it but missed the numeral oops!

Thank you for pointing it out. I will leave the original post so folks will understand your post.
