"The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not" JOHN ADAMS

John Adams thought that the day the document was presented would be the future holiday, but instead the day it was voted on and signed, the 4th, became the holiday.
I added the emphasis on the guns and "illumnations" (fireworks), in case anybody has a twit near them as I do who questions why we need fireworks on this day, as "bombs" are bad things...., I gave her the quote and she dove off in her tiny hybrid vehicle to buy tofu and organic bean sprouts.

Or, to put it properly, Happy Independence Day (many countries have a "fourth of July"; but ours is the one with a true reason to celebrate it.)

God Bless each and every soldier who has put on a uniform, picked up a weapon and laid it all on the line so my family and I could breathe the air of freedom.

Flag proudly flown by my neighbor, who is the widow of a WWII vet who passed away several years ago:

The American Revolution was a simple tax revolt that resulted in massive civil disobediance and ended with the people throwing off the governmet by force of arms.
