Hard Cases for Handguns

Do many people use a hard case for their handgun? I am thinking of buying one because I hate the cases that Ruger ships with their guns. The other reason I want a hard case is that I do not have a CCL and my state requires that I transport my firearm either in a locked compartment in my vehicle, locked in the trunk or in a locked case. State law also says that I can carry it open on the front seat of my vehicle, but I really don't like that idea. I drive a pickup truck so I have no trunk, and my 6" GP100 will not fit in my glove box.

I like the idea of a hard case with a handle that is lockable, so I was wondering if any of you also carry your gun in a hard case to and from the range?

I do; a co-worker bought it for me as a christmas gift a few years ago. It's made by ADG and fits 2 S&W 5906 (midsize) handguns comfortably. The bottom foam insert is removable so you can put some stuff under the guns too, which is nice for spare mags or other random stuff. It's got 2 lockable latches.

Most of the modern handguns I've purchased came in hard cases. However, I have purchased a few for others that didn't. Eventually I'll purchase some higher quality aluminum sided multi-pistol cases, but for now I'm content.

I'll throw out a third for Pelican cases if you want relatively bombproof protection.
Just to toss this out there (it doesn't have anything to do with protecting your firearm), down here in SC they consider behind the seats of a pickup to equal the "rearward" compartment, ie trunk. You don't have to put the gun in the bed of the truck for it to be 'in the trunk'. The center console of my Toyota is too small to hold anything but a pocket pistol, and the plastic glove compartment is far from secure storage. However "somewhere" in my extended cab there is a very nice spot.

I really like the traditional cases Ruger has provided. One ones that are actually hard plastic and molded to the gun (my P95 came with one of these) because they fit my gun perfectly and don't trap moisture. That said, some of Ruger's newer guns (the LCP for sure) are coming with soft cases instead which I don't like.

The padded cases however, I don't use for long term storage. The foam can trap moisture and moisture = rust. I keep a few only for transporting guns that I don't have cases for to and from the range. The ones I've used have been by Flambeau and Plano and both have worked fine.

Heck in a pinch, what I've done a few times when I needed a hard "case" was to get those tiny thin tackle boxes. Take a razor knife to the fixed panels and add the optional ones until you've notched out a space that will hold your gun. Usually you'll have a few other pockets available in it too for extra mags and such. They work pretty good.
