Or... "Ankle Rig Range Report"...
I identified a specific need for an ankle rig that could also double as a pocket pistol. I had a Kel-Tec P32, but finally decided that it wasn't "enough" gun to use as a lightweight sometimes primary.
After much deliberation, I chose a S&W 642 over the Kahr PM9, as I'd been having a bad month with Kahr polymers. Plus, I didn't own any revolvers.
I then set out to find the most comfortable/concealable ankle rig I could. I had the DeSantis Apache with the KelTec, and it was nice, but hey, if you can't hide a P32 on your ankle and forget it's there, you've got problems...
Anyway, this time, I ordered a "Cozy Partner" model 500 from the friendly folks at Renegade. The lady on the phone asked me several questions before recommending the model 500. I needed as much retention as possible, but wanted quick access to the pistol. The model 500 is a non-molded leather holster with an extremely thick elastic strap that covers the trigger guard. It holds firmly in place, but with practice, a quick tug is all that's needed to get to your piece, WITHOUT unsnapping the strap.
From the first time I put it on my ankle, I noticed that it was more comfortable than the DeSantis. Perhaps its the smoother elastic. Maybe it's the extra plush wool-like padding. I don't know, but the elastic doesn't scratch, it's more giving, but not too loose, there's more velcro for better adjustment, and it just feels good.
After about 15 minutes with it on my ankle, I stopped noticing the weight. There was no flop, no shift, no nothing.
I've been wearing it for about a month now, and I absolutely don't feel it down there. It hides under Lee's "Carpo" Jeans just fine, and is very quick to present with just a bit of practice.
All told, I paid $54 shipped for it. I would recommend it over the DeSantis because it is a softer, more comfortable material. It's more adjustable too. Plus, no strap over your backstrap to fool with. Just tug and go.
I've never had a "high dollar" ankle rig, so I can't say this is better than any "Rosen", etc... but I'm quite happy with it.
I wear it on the weekends, going out to dinner etc with the family, and I can tuck in my shirt, and still have instant access to my pistol while seated at the table, in the theater, in the car, etc...
For me, the 642 and Renegade are the best there is in this role.
