Got a birthday coming up in mid-March and I think I've got my bride of 49 years talked into getting me a pistol powder measure. Frankly, I am unhappy with the precision of my RCBS and Lee measures with Unique and H110 powders.

Thought perhaps a dedicated pistol powder measure like the Hornady with changeable rotor bushings might be the ticket. I owned a Pacific many years ago and was very pleased with it.

Any one out there have any experience with the Hornady? Tell me the plus and minus features of the thing, please.

For me (and probably most folks) the bushings are a big turn off. I want to be able to experiment with different charges and different powders and I don't like the idea of having to buy a new bushing every time. The bushings only give you a .2 - .3 granularity, and they cost about $6 a piece. The measure only comes with 5 of the "most popular" bushings. There are 22 bushings in total, so for complete flexibility in your loadings you'd have to spend an additional $100 get all the bushings!

For the price of a Hornady Pistol Powder Measure with all the bushings, you could get a Hornady Lock-N-Load measure with snap in pistol micrometer and rifle micrometer (seems to work better for pistol charges of large flake powders) and the drain insert (really convenient). My Hornady Lock-N-Load Progressive came with one and it does fine with Unique.

I'm sure the Hornady Pistol Powder Measure (or RCBS Little Dandy) would be great for someone who's set in their ways w/r/t their pistol loads -- but that ain't me.

Cortland:

Thanks for your response. I've used inserts before, and they always have thrown consistent charges, much better than the RCBS and Lee measures I currently have on hand.

But I looked into the Hornady regular measure, learned that it will accommodate micrometer metering tubes in both rifle and pistol configurations. It's a bit more expensive, but I'm sure it will work as well as or better than the bushing type measure.

I'm getting one.--Terry Beaver
