So, what do the tactical pros recommend for home defense, a double tap for each target or a single shot?

I ask this because pistol wise, I practice double taps for self/home defense, but thinking that shotguns have much more stopping power and can be slower to get back on target, should I only practice one round per target?

single tap, tripple tap, hit em with the shotgun, kick em in the knee...point is...get the job done, do what is required.... Arc-Lite

When shooting at falling steel plates (yes, I realize that they are not human targets, thank God) I shoot, reaccess and shoot again if the steel hasn't dropped.

Shoot, reaccess, repeat (if necessary), transition to the next target.

That's something that I learned from shooters much more experienced than me in regards to mil/LE/3gun/you-name-it and of course, training didn't hurt either.

An addendum to what I have already typed is that I tend to avoid double-taps with a shotgun if I can help it. Well placed hits in general are what count. A Double-tap on a target means that I'm down an extra shot in a very limited magazine. This is amplified when there are multiple targets. Most shotguns are slooow to load and I feel that is the weakest link.

JMHO: Be adaptable. Practice differant drills and techniques. If you can, do as much as possible to simulate you're HD scenario including getting out of bed and grabbing the gun. The way I have mine loaded it's set up for double taps on each target, but if there's a threat from somewhere else, I'll feel free to shoot it before I go back to the 1st one.

I have my Persuader loaded alternately with 000 buck and 1 oz slugs. With the 000 leading the way I can get the shot of fast without worrying as much about shot placement. I can then get a second, more carefully aimed shot, off on whatever threat seems greatest. I also have a chance of hitting more than one threat with the 1st shot if they're close enough. The slug behind makes sure they stop and stay stopped. Even if the 1st shot just makes them duck that gives me time to get a good solid hit with the slug.

I'm just an armchair commando, so take this with a grain of salt. YMMV and all that ;)

I think a double-tap with a shotgun would be superfluous. I'd fire one round to COM, then check as I cycled the action. If the BG didn't react too well to that one round, I'd instantly assume he was using body armor, and my second round would go to the head.
