Today, after work, I went to my favourite gun shop to "investigate" about waiting time for a Weatherby Vanguard in .338 Win Mag I'm considering buying.

Strolling through the floor racks my eyes fell on a nice Remington Pumpmaster in 30-06 with scope at what I think was a fair deal, $245.

As I was handling the rifle, this nice talkactive old man started talking to me and he said that it was one of the greatest rifle he ever ever had.

He appreciated the lighting fast speed for follow up shots (he is left handed), the total reliability compared to the semi-auto "cousin" (the Remington 740/742/7400) and the accuracy.

He said that he worked in Alaska in the in the oil field for more than 20 years as some sort of field guide or something like that and he had the 760 in 30-06 with extended magazine (10 rounds) stuffed with 220 grain rounds for dangerous situations. Others in AK carried the same type rifle in the same setup for the same purpose, according with what he said. (it's not the first time that I heard about the 760 as guide gun in AK)

He appreciated the handling, very quick and "intuitive" and the power reserve.
He said he carried occasionally a Ruger 375 bolt but he felt better with the 760 despite the less powerful round because of the round count and velocity especially because he is left handed. He said he dropped quite few moose and some big bruins with it.

Finally he said that the 760 was used by the FBI many years ago as Sniper rifle because agents had familiarity already with the Remington pump shotguns and he told me about a story of a plane highjacker in the early 70's that was dropped from a good distance with one 760 in 308.

So what is your take on this rifle??? Is really that good?? What about this FBI story??

I hunted with a 760 Gamemaster in 30.06 for many years. I found it to be a very accurate rifle that was easy to handle in the field because of it's size.

What I did not like about it was the mag did not latch well at times, you would think it was locked in then the next thing you know it dropped on the ground. You had to make sure you popped it in there hard when you put the mag in.

I sold mine about a 1 1/2 years ago fo $450.

saturno v,

Thats a very good price for that used 760. I would buy it just for the fun of it.

While I have seen accurate 760s over the decades I have seen and heard of some jamming and failing to operate.

A couple of years ago I picked a spot with a view on the farm here for opening day. When I got there in the dark another guy was already in 'my' spot. As I turned to find another place he got up and said that his rifle (760) was jammed. He walked off!

A couple of guys took 760's to Canada for hunts and had problems with them.

Don't confuse the jamming & receiver wear issues associated with the semiauto 740 with the pump action 760.

The 760 and the 7600 have no flies on them whatsoever and in my opinion are the most out of the box accurate hunting weight rifle Remington makes. A new sporter weight rem 700 has nothing on a 7600 in terms of accuracy. I suspect the floating AR15 style bolt head combined with a 100% free floated bbl contribute to this

That's a very VERY good deal around here. And the gun has nothing but praises from lots of different users.

For $245 I'd have a hard time walking away from it and I sure don't need another .30-'06!

I've had a 760 for 30 years. The only problems I've had is one faulty (bent) magazine that didn't reliably latch in the gun, and if you don't keep the chamber clean and oiled, it's liable to rust on you, especially in a humid climate. Otherwise, a very good choice.

I dunno about Alaska, but to my knowledge more Remington pumps are sold in Pennsylvania than any other state. Semi autos are not legal for hunting in Pennsylvania, and the next fastest second shot is the pump. I know several LEOs that carry them as patrol rifles because the controls are the same as a Remington 870. Some examples I have shot will shoot close to MOA with loads they like.

Good rifles.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr
