I could use some help.

I was going to join the local gun club to have access to the pistol range. Then I had the revalation that I would like to start doing some clay shooting (make the most of my anual dues ya know)

What type of shotgun would you recomend for this type of shooting? My price range would probably be up to $700 tops for now. Also what gauge for sport shooting like this? I was thinking 20 or twelve since the ammo is cheep.

Thanks,
Chris

No such thing as "clay shooting" on a regulation range.
It is either trap, skeet, or sporting clays. Guns and technique differ.
I'd say a 12 gauge gas operated auto with the least choke or the least choked screw tube and learn skeet first.

The Archives have tons of stuff on this.

A very good first shotgun is any US made pump stuffed with light loads. it covers lots of bases, lasts longer than we do and costs less than a week's pay.

After you've learned the basics and decided to go on, then look at autos, O/Us, etc.

thanks for the replies everyone.

I will have to cruise the sporting goods stores Sunday.

I shoot Trap, some days I do good some days I just shoot. I'm pretty new to the sport. I have a Smith & Wesson 1000 that I picked up used for less than $300, it came with 3 finger screw out adjustable chokes, 28" vent rib with some funny sites on it, has really pretty engraveing and nice wood to it. Shop around, you'll be amazed at the deals out there if you give it a little pacients. My S&W doesn't double as a home defense gun, only holding 2 shells in the mag (there's no plug either). I've shot a 23/25 which is pretty darn good, and I'm usally side-by-side next to guys who have shotguns of $1k-20k

I'd look for a used 'quality name' auto or over/under, if you really get into it, then trade the gun back in on a nicer one, pumps are fine too. At first I was all into it and looking at $3k guns, because alot of people will tell you "you have to have a 'trap gun' to shoot trap competitively", don't listen to them, I've seen some guys come out to the trap range with Remmy 870's, switch out the 18" barrel for a 30" and shoot a clean 25/25. Don't get wrapped into the fancy vests and shell carriers, Walmart sells a shell carrier for $5 that does the trick.
