Hey All - I have a small problem.

While detail cleaning my new Ruger GP100, I may have inadvertantly di**ed it up. I took the trigger group and hammer out to inspect and clean & after putting it back together, the hammer won't cock in the back position. I can pull the trigger to the rear & the cylinder will rotate and the hammer follows the motions but the trigger never 'breaks'. I took it apart probably a dozen times to see if I would eventually get lucky but nada! Also, the trigger pull 'seems' to get progressively heaiver after 4 or 5 pulls - could just be my fingers getting tired (don't know how many more nites I can stay up till 12:00 trying to fix this). Any pointers? Did I somehow trip the trigger? The manuals' reassembly instructions have not helped me.

BTW - the transfer bar and pawl seem to be in the right positions.

Any ideas would be great. I REALLY hate not having a working firearm in the house. Weird feeling.

Did you remove the hammer strut? If you put that in turned the wrong way the hammer binds.

I finally scratched a small arrow on my hammer strut pointing toward the front of the gun.

This may or may not help. I think my Redhawk is similar to your GP. I have had the same thing with my Redhawk. If you look at the mainstring strut it has a hole in the end of it facing the trigger assembly. The trigger link from the trigger assembly must go INSIDE this hole to work properly. Also be very carefull with compression springs on the trigger assembly when reassembling. I made a boo boo in holding the trigger assembly and The spring and plunger are still flying. Ruger very nicely sent me a new spring and plunger.

Thanks for the replies. I'm a little confused now. Are the hammer strut and the mainspring strut the same thing? I ran an internet search but cannot find a picture.

Thanks again

Jason

Oh, I thought I was going to meet one of the few people on the planet who actually BROKE a Ruger. Yours is just misassembled. Shame on your for trying to brag like that....

:D

WHEW! Finally got it (even had to dance a little jig :p). The trigger is a little gritty just before it lets off but I think some dry firing and range time will cure that. Now it's off to test her out and sight her in with some 158 grain soft points.

Thanks for the help!

I thought your trigger spring went "PING!" when it wasn't suppose to. I did that the first time I cleaned my SP101...

Glad she's back!

Yep, me too! For a second there, I thought you managed to shoot a ruger to death..

oo oo! I broke 1 do i get credit?

first time stripping down my 22/45 and when I tried to put it together, the backstrap/locking pin wouldn't seat. I fought and fought and finally it "popped" in. well what I didn't know is the rear-most pin/rivet had broken. My safety was tied in with that!! I didn't know it until I was showing someone how the safety blocked the gun from firing. three trigger pulls moved the safety to off. Luckily while handling, I observed rule #_ and emptied the chamber and mag. to make a short story long here...;) the gun went "click". Lucky there was no ammo in it!. Ruger was nice enough to send me the new part even when I admitted it was my bad!

Yeah, I left that out of my first post. It actually did go "PING" & about 30 seconds later I heard it hit a wall....or a shelf...or the ceiling... The next morning, at about 4:30 (Yes, I was a little obsessed with fixing my gun) I actually found the 'micro-orbital-hi-speed' spring and plunger IN THE NEXT ROOM !! All with a little help from a shop magnet and some good karma ;) .
I learned one very important thing: When screwing with...err...fixing something with small springs that are under pressure, do it in a small, well lit room without a lot of furniture (i.e. bathroom). This way, if your spring decides to go sputnik on you, the little bugger can't go as far.
