Hi, I'm helping my Dad look for a revolver. He has a very specific style of gun he wants. He wants something like this:

example.jpg

That's a Ruger SP101 with a 4 inch barrel, in 32

However, he wants something in 357 Mag or .40 s&W (if there is such thing). He wants a 4 inch barrel too.

Is there such a thing as a pistol with a similar shape, 4 inch barrel, in 357 mag or .40?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Check out the relevant page on Ruger's Web site - see here. The model code next to each picture will tell you what model you want to order. If you want a stainless steel .357 Magnum with 4" barrel, the product code is KGP-141. They are freely available from any number of distributors and retailers - in fact, you can get used ones pretty freely as well.

A 4 inch .357mag is about as common as you can get. Everyone and his son makes one. The Ruger you have pictured (the SP-101) come chambered in .357mag with a 3 inch barrel, and the GP-100 comes with a 4 incher.

There should be no problem finding one in 357 magnum. The trick would be finding one in 40 S&W ;) Good luck on that one :D Me, I'd go w/ the 357 :)

Ruger GP100......great gun...357 4" accurate and affordable and built like a brick out house.......
You can usually find used one's for like $250 around here........just be sure and do the revolver check out and you're good to go..

Actually S&W has a model 646 out right now - an L-Frame in 40 S&W with a 4" barrel. This is an "uncatalogued" model, so ordering one can get difficult as it isn't on the website or in the S&W catalogs. I don't know if this model is specific to a single distributor (ala the semi famous "Lew Horton" 3" models); but I have been seeing at least one at each of the last several gunshows I've attended. Calling around to your local gun dealers will probably find someone who at least knows about this model.

Pay closer attention----he wants a SP101----not GP100

Sorry---IIRC the SP101 was never offered with a 4in barrel in .357------only the .22's and .32's

Longest .357 SP101 is a 3 or 3.25in barrel.

SP101's are also only five shot cylinders in .38/.357 mag. He may be unhappy with that.

Perhaps a Stainless S&W 686? I've got a 3" (pre-agreement to who that still matters, the thread is about a Ruger after all...) and I'm very happy with it. IIRC they have a 4", but someone who has the Smith catalog and models memorized will be sure.

I know he wants a sp101, but I just held a 3in. gp100 and those smaller grips are awesome, they make that gp seem like a different gun.....tom

Pay closer attention----he wants a SP101----not GP100

Pay even closer attention and you will see he asked if there was a pistol of similar shape......
The GP-100 does fit that description.

That SP-101 3" .357 is a sweetheart, IMHO. Wifey has one. So did Dove's Custom Guns in Princeton,WV last week. www.doveguns.com

tomkatz: Gp w/ 4" & smaller grips? HHhhmmm?!?!?

I like the Ruger revolvers, Sp-101 (esp 3"), GP, and Blackhawk. Admittedly not as smooth a Smith's OOB, generally, but they "just got it!"

Bob F.....no, the gp100 I longingly fondled was a 3in barrel, but I am assuming those grips are available and would fit a four inch speciman....personally I want that 3 incher, it felt goooood in the hand.....tom
