May be off of one of the WWII British purchase revolvers. What is the serial number? It should be stamped on the flat on bottom of the barrel.

No marks on the bottom anywhere..

Top has
Smith & Wesson Springfield mass. U.S.A
Patented Feb.6.06. Sept.14.09.DEC.29.14

Five inch .38 S&W (not Special) and no number make it seem to be a spare from the days of Lend Lease and British contract Military & Police revolvers. Technically a Model of 1905 Fourth Change. It would be a good replacement on one of those sawn off so short as to lose the ejector rod latch lug when sold surplus; but it would not be a simple screw-it-in change.
