Help identifying?

My 12YO son "inherited" his great-grandfather's reloading equipment. Lucky kid has a box squared away with an old RCBS single-stage, a set of Micro-Precision .30-30 dies, Redding Model 3 powder measure, and a Lyman M5 scale, among other odds and ends, all waiting for when he is older. The box he was most excited about was an orginal Lee Loader for .30-30, missing the primer locating ring. I digress, to brag for him that he has better equipment than I (all Lee basic stuff), but also as a reference for the two things I could not identify. Obviously a shell holder, but for what? And the pin is threaded on one end, and the cross hole is blind, possibly not reloading related:

I agree with the pin being part of priming system.

I believe (but not 100% positive) that the threaded shell holder is a Herter's.

Shell holder is #2, yes it is standard 7/8-14 threads. Can't figure out if there would be a reason to install in the top of the press, or if it has a different purpose, or is from a long-lost piece of his equipment.

Thought the pin might have been for priming, but the RCBS press uses a straight pin and set screw, so, again,wondering what it might be from.

Larger calibers use the shell holder on the top to prime cases. I have used that process to prime 50 BMG shells. That is what this looks like, the rod will thread into the base, then seat primers into the case at the top. Just my $0.02..

With the info provided here, I did some searching of the interwebs, and it looks like both pieces would have worked with OLD Herter's presses. Wife's grandfather, I never saw one on his bench, he was the one who walked me through the basic process years ago. Must have upgraded to the RCBS at some time, probably before I was born, and these pieces just got left behind. Thanks for solving this mystery!

They do tend to be, what's a polite way of saying "packrats"? So, yes, definitely need to look around some more next time. He has gotten to the point/age where he won't reload, or even hunt or shoot anymore, and told us to take it all. My oldest is the only relative that is interested, and he can appreciate the history of the quality equipment.

I have the optional priming system for the RCBS rockchucker press, and it came with two of the threaded pins with the cross hole drilled. There were two pins and cups, one for small, one for large primers. The hole was sized so you could use a decapping pin through it to turn it. Good luck.
