hello everybody. i need your help on choosing my next rifle as a gift for myself this christmas. im planning to buy a .223 just for plinking. my choices are kel-tec su 16 or bushmaster carbon 15 (the ruger mini-14 is definitely out of my list). the carbon 15 is my 2nd choice because of the sealed magwell, by the way i live in the wonderful state of california. can you help me guys with these. any suggestions will help. thanks

well, let me say this; i just picked up a plr 16 , kel tec's 223 pistol. I have only just began to break it in, firing about 200 rounds with various synth and usgi mags. i love it! it needs some more testing , to see what it likes best. I do know now not to use ANY STEEL OR WASHED STEEL , OR NICKEL WASHED STEEL ammo in them. When I got home, i was going to do a quick break down and clean/wipe down on the action /receiver etc. i started to take it apart , and waalaaah!
it just ain't dirty. Normally an ar would be crud coated at this point , to where you could measure the thickness layer just by 'eye gauging'. i look inside the receiver on this, and i can easily see the shiny inside plastic of the upper receiver! I put it away, with a smile on my face. the piston drive saves the day. If i ever did decide to get an ar, it would have to be a piston drive.

I can only tell you what my personal choice would be in your situation. I would buy the Kel-tec and not look back.

The Kel-tec seems to be well on it's way to proving itself as a viable rifle. The fact that you can use detachable mags makes all the difference to me.

Carbons don't have the best rep for reliability. Rob Silvers tested several variants, none ran 100% vs. conventional ARs which did. Don't know about SU16 first-hand, but most owners seem happy.

"Fundamentally, the Blackstar rifle is simply a redesigned AR-15 lower receiver in which the trigger has been moved up and back so that a traditional comb stock can be used. As is well known to the directors of the VPC and the Brady Center, a comb stock is far less dangerous to public order than a pistol grip. Not only will Blackstar shooters be able to legally enjoy all the functionality of an AR-15 rifle, but they will be able to sleep better at night knowing their use of a dolphin-friendly traditional comb stock must result in far less injury, death and carnage than would be caused by a pistol grip stock. And fewer dead kittens."

I almost split my side laughing at the heavily laid on sarcasm
