Help me make my M&P 15 Sport more like a classic M-16.

I am new to AR type rifles, and don't know much about the names of the parts. This makes it nearly impossible to search google to find the right parts.

I found a decent handle that would fit atop the picatinny rail, but what about the buttstock? I hear there are extra parts required to make it fit. Any links to sites that sell decent priced buttstock would be appreciated.

Are there other parts I could change to make it more like a traditional M-16?

Also, could I use the handle/rear sight with my stock M&P front sight?

thanks in advance

To quote the Beatles..."let it be".

But, if you want to give it the 'Nam appearance, a carry handle and A2 buttstock would get you close to your goal.

You can spend a lot of money turning one AR configuration into another so consider selling the Sport as is, then get what you want. Or keep the Sport and start a second AR.

Anyway, if you want an A1 or A2 rifle buttstock you do need to replace the M4 style receiver extension/buffer/spring with a rifle version. Or you could buy a stock that looks something like the A1/A2 but fits your receiver extension. The Magpul ACS comes to mind.

When it comes to putting together a very close M16 build, you can invest a lot of time and money.

Something to think of if you're just in to looks: Colt/Walther sells a tactical .22lr that looks very much like an M16, but an A4 version not the old A1/A2 with integrated carry handle though that doesn't sound like a problem to you.

And yes, the A4 carry handle sight should work with your S&W front sight.

If it wasn't for the current state of the AR market, I would just say you are better off selling the Sport and buying a gun closer to what you want. The Sport, while an excellent gun in its own right, has so many deviations from "milspec" that it would probably be cost prohibitive to try and replace all the parts necessary.

Even so, it might be worthwhile just waiting for the market to cool down again and reconsider starting from scratch.

I wouldn't do it with a sport, it doesn't have the forward assist or dust cover, right?

Maybe add the carry handle if you like, but anything much more is just trying to make a sport into a standard config rifle. Which it isn't.

It will be rather expensive to try to make yours a M16 or M16-A1 clone. With the short barrel you will have a rifle that was never really in the US inventory unless you try to clone a CAR.

Why not source a A2 upper and the proper buttstock and make an A2 clone? Here is my AR15-A2 that i have had since the late 80's.

Compared to a M4 similar to your M&P

I found an A2 buttstock with this description:

"A2 Butt Stock Assembly, Includes A2 Style Impact Resistant Advanced Polymer Stock, A2 Extension Tube, Recoil Spring, Stock Spacer, Premium A2 Buffer Assembly and Screw"

Does this have everything I need to put it on my M&P?

it's specific to the castle nut on the collapsible stock. if you don't care about scratching up the castle nut, you can just use some channellock pliers.

Check out amazon. I'm serious, search for a15 <insert part>. I easily found a carry handle to picatinny and an A2 stock with all buffert tube and conversion components.

Next you need to deal with the a2 hand guard which seems more difficult to find.
